Re: Problem with subtitles and bitdepth
What I've learned about Samsung TVs so far: 1) They don't support 10bit h264. Sometimes, you can get the TV to display it, if the combination of bitrate and other factors is right (I/P/B structure ie.) but the picture will be showing strange artifacts as the TV will try to interpret 10bit as 8bit. I...

Re: PS3/PS4 won't play subtitles
As far as I know the PS3/PS4 doesn't support MKVs with embedded subtitles. You have to demux subtitles into separate file, *.SRT preferably, and give it the same name as it's the name of the MKV file - like "movie.mkv" and "movie.eng.srt" or "movie.fr.srt"

Re: Subtitle transcoding difficulty.
I suppose that the embedded subs are ASS? If yes then the answer is that it's the feature of the Samsung TV, it ignores ASS styling and only displays the plain text.

Re: Subtitles not coming up.
Try to add proper ISO language code to the filename - ie. " movie.mp4 " and " movie.spa.srt ". If "spa" isn't working, try "es" (ISO 639-2 Language Codes, https://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/php/code_list.php) UMS should be able to autodetect the subtitles language but the detection is not perfec...

Re: PS4 transcoding problems
... The PS4 is wired directly to my router, and is connected to my computer though a powerline lan adaptor . ... Is it a BPL adaptor, as Broadband over PowerLine? I work with these adaptors on daily basis and I'm mostly not impressed with their performance - usually it can deliver only some tens of...

Re: PS4 Playback menu
Because it's not implemented in the PS4 Media Player app. At least not for transcoded files.
