Just thought I'd let you know I seem to have resolved my problem by using Revo Uninstaller to uninstall UMS completely. It found many files being left behind. Then I did a fresh install of 6.5.2 and my m4a files are playing fine again, at least for now.

Since upgrading to UMS 6.5.2 I can no longer seem to play back m4a files.
