Are you speaking about folders or files. With that setting folders are always displayed to give you chance to go to the subfolders. Only not supported files are hidden (not shown) and it works fine for me.

I donn't think that to make UMS fully configurable from the web interface is a good idea. I think that supervisor of the UMS server should decide which users (renderers) should have acces to the server and which folders will be available to them.
