Add simple solutions to the FAQ

Post by SpeedyQ »

Over and over again I see people struggling to get UMS configured and failing.
I'm sure a lot of people give up and don't experience what a great product UMS is because of simple hardware or firewall related issues.

My suggestion is to add more information to the FAQ about these kind of issues:
1. What do I have to do to get UMS working with enabled firewall.
2. How can I test if my firewall settings are correct.
3. What parameters should I check and set in my network adapter to get the most out of my network interface.

I know that these kind of questions don't have to do with UMS specific, but they can be great spoilers to those with less IT experience.
And these users probably miss a lot of the great product that UMS is.

If you think this is a good idea and you know more of these kind of questions, feel free to add them to the list in this thread.
We can then make a proper selection which ones are ok to publish in the FAQ.

I like it.

We also need a working Knowledge Base - or even forum search... where error codes are tied to resolutions.

Good to hear that you want to improve search facilities and making information more accessable with the right tooling. :)
If I look at the current FAQ page, I think it serves it's purpose pretty well; even simple browser ctrl-F will find me what I want.
What I'm missing is an overall page that categorizes the problem areas, so that you can easily go to the next page that gives you the right answers.
But that's just my opinion but maybe the easiest feasible option.
What do you think?

Yeah i think a search feature for the "Help" tab would be wonderful -- just to drill down by keywords.

And off the "Help" tab a new link to the GitHub Issues -- Call it "known issues / KB " somthing...

ALso would love to see a setting on the "Logs" tab where when you pack the Debug's it auto host's it some where captures the url, and pastes it into a GitHub issue window.

Workflow for that: Click Debug files --> *NEW BUTTON* Zip and Upload selected files --> uploads to somewhere, script captures the URL to clipboard --> opens a github Issue tracker winow with a predefined message also form clipboard (possible continue to use the code.google.com template for now... --> User then can fill out the issue.

Code.google.com's template:

Code: Select all

Link to Debug: (_URL_)

1) What steps will reproduce the issue?
    1.
    2.
    3.

2) What is the observed output?

3) What version of the product are you using?

4) What operating system, hardware, GFX card are you running UMS?

5) What is your LAN configuration like: 10/100/1000MB wired? wireless a/b/g/n? Firewalls?

6) What Renderer are you trying to Stream / Transcode too? Is it recognized by UMS?

Please provide any additional information below.

all issues are now tracked on github automated like...

what do you think?
