[Suggestion] external / editable translation files & UTF-8

Post by nicomess »

I order to make UMS available to a larger community ... translation is essential.

For now the builtin languages are ( taken from UMS.conf )
# The following translations are available:
# ar = Arab
# bg = Bulgarian
# ca = Catalan
# zhs = Chinese (Simplified)
# zht = Chinese (Traditional)
# cz = Czech
# da = Danish
# nl = Dutch
# en = English
# fi = Finish
# fr = French
# de = German
# el = Greek
# is = Icelandic
# it = Italian
# iw = Hebrew
# ja = Japanese
# ko = Korean
# no = Norwegian
# pl = Polish
# pt = Portuguese
# br = Portuguese (Brazilian)
# ro = Romanian
# ru = Russian
# sl = Slovenian
# es = Spanish
# sv = Swedish
# tr = Turkish
... but it is not possible to see/edit these files in the UMS folder or even add new translations in a simple manner.

The translations can be found on GitHub at https://github.com/UniversalMediaServer ... urces/i18n.

By now translations use escape sequences and not UTF8 which makes the translations less readable and therefore it is not that easy to spot potential mistakes. example:
K dispozici jsou následující proměnné:

Furthermore contributions require a lot ( signing up on github , forking, pull request ... ) of effort especially for non-developers.
Providing a way to put translations into a folder ( i.e. /i18n ) in the UMS directory in UTF-8 would greatly improve the user's experience and make testing new translations much easier.

I would help in providing a web interface / application for new translations and we should maybe discuss a way to vote / confirm those translations before they are being merged into UMS.
This way we would have a system where we can ask the user's to contribute translations if new strings become available in UMS.

What do you think? :D
