Playing folders stored on external drive

I just installed UMS on my iMac. I stream videos from my iMac to my television via my Western Digital Media Player Live. It works fine for videos in folders that are on my computer's hard drive. But although I can include folders from an external drive connected to my computer in my shared folders in the UMS interface on my computer, these folders do not show up on the UMS interface on my TV. I tried with different external drives, some formatted in in a Mac format and others formatted in Windows NT file system. The videos are all in MP4 format. Any advice?
