CPU Selection guide for transcoding

Hi guys,
I'm currently using UMS on my laptop and it's CPU is not strong enough to handle FullHD videos with "Smooth Motion" on :( . So i have a idea to assemble a desktop PC for this purpose with a decent CPU. I have heard that CPUs with more cores are great for video transcoding. Some of my friends said that used intel xeon (like Xeon E5-2670) or AMD octa-core processors are ideal for this than Core i5 or i7 since i'm not a gamer. So I need ideas from you guys to find a CPU without breaking the bank :D . Specially about CPUs you are using for transcode 1080p videos with "Smmoth Motion".

Any help is appreciated :) thanks.

E5-2670 would be for enthuisiasts/pros, i really dont think that's necesary. i'm pretty sure low/mid-range i5 would do the job.

is there a significant improvement in transcoding performance if I use a mid-range desktop i5 CPU because i have a i5-4200M 2.5Ghz(3.1Ghz Turbo) in my laptop but it can't handle FullHD video with "smooth motion".720p are working perfectly.
Thanks. :)

The smooth motion setting is very CPU-intensive so you will benefit from a high-end CPU for 1080p. If you don't use that, you can use most CPUs

On previous servers running UMS I had 4 core Q6600 and Q8400 both of which ran fine. More recently I have built replacement servers using Skylake g4400 and g4500, both dual core, and which also work fine for ums 1080p
