Roku support

Post by weyrava »

Hi all, I've been looking for a media server that will work with the Roku 3.

With recent firmware, it acts as a DLNA client if you add the Roku Media Player channel. UMS identifies it as:

Code: Select all

User-Agent: Roku/DVP-5.3 (045.03E04016A)
I haven't been able to create a working .conf file for it though, since it seems like the Roku doesn't support any of the transcoder output profiles, and native playback is pretty limited. From the product specs page, the only supported containers are MP4 and MKV, with H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio. H.264 seems limited to 8-bit, but I haven't tested it too thoroughly. Subtitles generally seem to not work.

So my main question is, is there any way to get UMS to transcode to an MP4 or MKV container?

That's where I'm stuck too. Did you have any success finding the "winning" combination of configuration? Did you get transcoding to work? I've got a lot of avi and non-supported file types.

Thanks.

I don't have a Roku to test, but initially I think it will be just a matter of creating an specific profile using http://www.universalmediaserver.com/faq ... erSupport1 to support the DLNA formats played by Roku Media Player channel ( http://www.roku.com/channels/?_escaped_ ... dia-player )

From http://support.roku.com/entries/423946- ... l-support-

Code: Select all

What media file types does the Roku Media Player channel support?

The Roku Media Player channel enables you to play back personal video, music and photo files from a DLNA server on your local network or a USB drive attached to a USB equipped Roku.

The following media file formats are supported:

Video — MKV (H.264), MP4 (H.264), MOV (H.264), WMV (VC-1, firmware 3.1 only)

Music — AAC, MP3, WMA, FLAC (firmware 5.3 and later), WAV (firmware 5.3 and later)

Photo — JPG, PNG, GIF (non-animated)

Only supported file types are shown in the Roku Media Player channel. The channel hides unsupported file types. Dolby Digital audio in MKV and MP4 movies is only supported via pass through.

DTS in MKV movies is also only supported via pass through. You must connect your Roku player via HDMI to a TV or receiver capable of decoding Dolby Digital or DTS in order to hear videos with audio tracks in those formats.

Some media server software may convert files into Roku compatible formats.

DRM-protected content is not supported.

I tried this with my Roku 2 and using the Roku Media Player channel. UMS did recognize my Roku, but video still did not play. I let the player sit in the 'playing' state (not playing) until it went back to the menu on its own.

Here's the log:
