Nexus 7 (flo)/BubbleUPnP/MX Player Config Updates.

Post by Tyestor » Mon Mar 02, 2015 1:26 am

Now that Universal Media Server 5.0.1 and Android 5.0.2 is out along with multiple new updates to BubbleUPnP and MX Player, I was wondering if leroy and/or any of the devs (or anyone else) would be willing to help me update the config. It still needs work.

This is the latest version of the config: download/file.php?id=1760

Attached is a trace log of me playing a file with the below specs.

Device: Nexus 7 2013 (Wi-Fi).
UMS version: v5.0.1 Java 8.
Java version: Java u40 (64-bit).
Android Version: CyanogenMod 12 2015-03-01 Nightly (This is essentially v5.0.2 Lollipop).
Render/DLNA: BubbleUPnP v2.3.3.
Media Player: MX Player v1.7.37 (Custom Codec = Yes (Arm v7-Neon)).

Two things I noticed right off the bat with the file I tested with, I had no audio and the seek bar was bugged. I don't even know if the video was even transcoding, there was no fps loss but its hard to tell with that file since the drops only come in later on. The video is 1080p, 10+Mbs, H264 and Hi10p. I didn't have the no audio problem on 5.0.0b/Android 4.4.4/One of the MX Player updates (not sure what it would be, its been a while since I've used my tablet). Also, one of the other problems that usually arises is subtitles either not showing up or not being disabled by the "disable subtitles" checkbox in UMS. I didn't have time to check either unfortunately.

Update: I got sound working, I had to turn off "Use LPCM for Audio" in UMS > Transcoding Settings > Common Transcode Settings > Audio Settings. I would prefer to have this setting on, though. Any ideas?

Update: New problem, after getting sound working, playback stops at around the 1:20 mark. I cannot test if subtitles are being displayed or will be turned off after checking "disable subtitles" as there is no dialogue yet. I will attach a new debug log.

Hi Tyestor,

In the debug file I found that you have only the PlayStation 3 enabled, so the BubbleUPnP-MX Player config is not ussed:

Code: Select all

INFO 15:28:08.607 [main] Enabled 1 configurations, listed in order of loading priority:
INFO 15:28:08.607 [main] : PlayStation 3
DEBUG 15:28:08.661 [main] UPNP Services are online, listening for media renderers
You can enable or disable renderers in the "General Configuration" GUI tab.
Be sure to enable the BubbleUPnp config there.

The "Use LPCM for Audio" setting is false by default and not suitable for wireless connections (see the UMS.conf for more info)

I made some nice progress with the BubbleUPnP-MX Player config file.
The new BubbleUPnp/MX Player config is posted here

Yeah, I had a feeling that the config wasn't enabled due to the fact that changes I made weren't applying. I don't know why its not enabled though, the only two configs I have in the renderers folder is the PS3 config and the BubbleUPnP config. Also, the select renderers dialogue is broken: http://i.imgur.com/Kt5fIUW.png - I'm going to do a clean install and see if that fixes it.

Okay, UMS appears to be detecting the new config now after the clean install. I went ahead and updated my Java version too (I'll add it to the OP). And yeah, the transcode is still stopping. That is the biggest hurdle that needs to be solved. Could it be an MX Player issue? I'll add some logs anyway. Also, is there anything that can be done to the config that affects my device (Nexus 7)? I noticed that the config is primarily for your phone. There could be some stuff that I can put in the config that my Nexus can do that your phone can't. Oh and why MPEG and not H264 may I ask? Seems like unnecessary transcoding.

The debug gives:

Code: Select all

File "[Meguca]_Puella_Magi_Madoka_Magica_-_01_[BD][h264-1080p_FLAC][462E256B].mkv" will not be streamed because the audio will use the encoded audio passthrough feature
Uncheck the "Encoded audio passthrough for AC-3 and DTS" setting (and save) so that the video be streamed and not transcoded.
However maybe it is better to do a real clean install so all UMS default settings will be used.

I'll uncheck that. I did the cleanest install I possibly could. I uninstalled UMS, AviSynth and Java and went through and deleted all files and folders referring to UMS, AviSynth, Oracle, Sun and Java in Program Files, Program Files (x86), Program Data, Documents and User (Roaming, Local etc...). When I reinstalled UMS, I checked the clean install box. The only reason that the box for encoded audio passthrough is checked is because I checked it, I watch stuff on my PS3 as well. Its something that needs to be checked if you want to get around certain...annoyances. UMS was definitely at its defaults.

Hahaha, okay. Now that I have unchecked "Encoded audio passthrough for AC-3 and DTS" some things are starting to make sense. Before, BubbleUPnP was showing that Madoka was an MPEG file when in fact it is an MKV file. I am assuming that is because UMS is set to transcode it to MPEG (because the aforementioned option is checked). Now that it is unchecked, it shows MKV. However...Madoka is a 10-bit video. Even though Nexus 7s are fairly powerful, they aren't powerful enough to play 10-bit videos without severe frame drops. As is evidenced by what happens next. I play the test file, and it is obviously not encoding because I can seek and the correct video length is show, also the file is dropping frames like Snoop Dogg drops rhymes. Either I check "Encoded audio passthrough for AC-3 and DTS" and have transcoded 10-bit files that aren't laggy but I am only able to play them for about a minute before they stop. Or I uncheck "Encoded audio passthrough for AC-3 and DTS" and I can watch 10-bit video files to their completion only with extreme frame drops. Sigh. I can play literally everything with no problems except for 10-bit videos. Its unfortunate that a lot of my stuff is or will be 10-bit in the future and will need to be transcoded to my Nexus (the 10-bit stuff transcodes fine to the PS3 btw, if that helps).
