Vizio Smart TVs

Post by civ »

Is there any way to get Vizio Smart TVs to play files via UMS? It doesn't appear to see MKV files at all and files such as MP4 generate messages in the Vizio interface such as Audio codec not supported and Video codec not supported. Also, it doesn't see any files in the Transcode folder(s).

Log is being spammed with the following:

This being my first Smart TV with built-in WiFi, I'd love to be able to use the functionality to access videos on my computer wirelessly and play them using UMS without having to go through the PS3 or my DirecTV HD-DVR (both having some annoying restrictions).

Thanks in advance! :)

Hi civ,

It sounds like you and I might be in a similar boat. I got the VIZIO e601i-a3 for Christmas and am struggling to get my movies to stream to it. Let me share with you what I've learned.

Here's a link to a profile that someone developed for the VIZIO TVs (developed for ps3mediaserver). At least it gets recognized that way. http://pastebin.com/NUW1QYkk Drop it into C:\Program Files\Universal Media Server\renderers directory and restart UMS.

I made a few minor tweaks for my setup. My movies are h.264 video and AAC audio codecs in .mp4 containers and they work just fine when I have then on a USB drive direct-connected to the TV. Therefore, I'm looking to skip transcoding of .mp4 files so I removed mp4 from the TranscodeExtensions stanza and added mp4 to the StreamExtensions stanza.

With all that said, I have gotten my .mp4 files to stream fine...as long as they're shorter than about 23 1/4 minutes. VERY weird. Any files that are longer than about 1400 seconds won't even start playing and result in orange error messages at the bottom right of the TV app stating that the video and audio codecs are not supported. I know they are supported because up to that length, they stream just fine and as mentioned above, if I pull the files to a USB drive and connect it to the TV, I can play any length I want to just fine. In addition, I am hitting similar issues if I use the Twonky media server...mp4 files stream just fine as long as they are shorter than about 23 1/4 minutes. Then they won't even start and the errors pop up again.

Anyway, that's what I'm seeing. I do realize that PS3 Media Server and Universal Media Server are different products, but I have posted this to the PS3MediaServer board with no replies. Hopefully we'll get some traction over here.

Thanks,

Bill

I have a M470VSE. I tried the .conf file but it appears that this TV shuts off whenever I attempt to play a movie file. The TV literally turns off as I select the file or hit Play. What is up with that...? :|

Hi civ,

Finally getting back to the board a bit. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what your issue is. I seem to have found work-around for mine. I started streaming raw VOB files and they work just fine...watching a movie right now with the kids. Sorry I can't be of any more help to you.

Cheers,

Bill

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I was hoping to catch the Bill's eye. I'm having the same issue where I can't view files longer than 22 to 23 minutes. I'm just trying to see if he can describe how he overcame that limitation.

Gimme a bit, I just got the Vizio M501d-a2r so I'll be trying to work on it. I already got the Sony BDP-S590 to work with UMS (they updated the renderer info with my new config builds ago) so I'll give this a shot. ;)

Ok, here is what I've found so far and this is my initial post to get the ball rolling.

I'm going to work with AVI files only until I can get that resolved as that's the main file always played for me.

First I'm starting with: American Dad - S01E01 - Pilot.avi, in UMS it shows as an MPG but on my USB hard drive plugged into the TV it shows as an actual AVI.

When I go to play the file this shows in the debug:

Code: Select all

12-01 08:25:48 Started playing American Dad - S01E01 - Pilot.avi on your Vizio Smart TV
12-01 08:28:33 Stopped playing American Dad - S01E01 - Pilot.avi on your Vizio Smart TV
12-01 08:28:36 Started playing American Dad - S01E01 - Pilot.avi on your Vizio Smart TV
12-01 08:28:44 Buffer read ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException error:
12-01 08:28:44 readCount: "576460752303419392"
12-01 08:28:44 maxMemorySize: "209715200"
12-01 08:31:11 Stopped playing American Dad - S01E01 - Pilot.avi on your Vizio Smart TV
12-01 08:31:13 Started playing American Dad - S01E01 - Pilot.avi on your Vizio Smart TV
12-01 08:34:10 Stopped playing American Dad - S01E01 - Pilot.avi on your Vizio Smart TV
12-01 08:34:13 Started playing American Dad - S01E01 - Pilot.avi on your Vizio Smart TV
12-01 08:36:38 Stopped playing American Dad - S01E01 - Pilot.avi on your Vizio Smart TV
Now if I let the TV sit there while it appears frozen, the file will eventually play after something like 5 minutes.

This is what UMS is doing the second I start to play it:

Image

And this is what UMS is doing after the 5 minutes when it ACTUALLY is playing it:

Image

This is the Media info the for the AVI file:

Image

Java is using nearly 1 gig of memory to stream a 174 meg file before it even starts playing 5 minutes later.

Here's what I've found so far on that AVI file. Keep in mind I'm still working on the American Dad AVI file. That's my baseline test.

If I REM out this in the conf file:

Code: Select all

#TranscodeExtensions=dvr-ms,dvr,mkv,dv,ty,mov,ogm,hdmov,hdm,rmv,rmvb,rm,asf,evo,asx,flv,m2v,mpe,mod,tivo,ty,tmf,ts,tp,m2p,mp4,m4v,avi,wmv,wm,divx,div,flac,mlp,fla,wma,m4a,aac,dts,mka,ape,ogg,shn,mpc,ra,mp2,wv,oma,aa3,gif,png,arw,cr2,crw,dng,raf,mrw,nef,pef,tif,tiff
#StreamExtensions=avi
The AVI file plays INSTANTLY!

Now when I go to the MP4 version of this file DIFFERENT AMERICAN DAD FILE it won't play. Audio and Video not supported <--- Says that on the TV
This mp4 type will need to be corrected and transcoded.

Image

======================================

This file plays fine:

Image

This file doesn't play video, but does audio. It's also an AVI:

Image

===========================

So far it looks like these file types play directly without transcoding:
.avi (xvid/mp3)

These files NEED transcoded:
.mp4 (avc/aac)
.avi (mpeg4-divx5/mp3)

Can someone tell me how I would transcode the mpeg4 / divx to Xvid? As in what I would change to force it to do this? Then I can test that on the TV.

My buffer also goes way negative, the same exact value as in your screenshot. I've tried all sorts of options to stop this from happening. If this error were to be solved we'd be all set.
