Edit: This was a firewall bug, not a UMS bug

01-11 20:08:59 The server is now available for renderers to find
My pc IP is 192.168.1.2.
OS: Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit.
Windows 7 Firewall Control is set to "Enable All".
I can ping PS3 from my pc. PS3 IP is 192.168.1.100.
Still it doesnt show up. If I force PS3 to search for media servers then I get a new line in UMS trace log:

Code: Select all

01-11 20:09:27 No IP filter specified, access granted to /192.168.1.100
and still nothing. What is happening there ? Why doesnt UMS provide some sort of error log or smth so I could fix whatever is wrong on that step.

Btw I used sniffer and was able to detect PS3 multicast packets on my PC along with UMS responses to those packets (thats when the "access granted" line appears).
Also on a notebook (Win XP) that is in the same network i installed PMS and it is detected properly by the PS3. PMS on my PC (Win7) didnt detect PS3 so I tried UMS hoping it would work better.

Any clues?

P.S. My network configuration is:
[PS3] <--LAN cable--> [Notebook WinXP]<--Wi-Fi--> [wifi Router] <--LAN cable-->[PC Win7]
Notebook is acting as a bridge, merging together its LAN and Wifi network adapters and thus making PS3 appear in Wi-Fi network.

Hi Danat, you can try changing the port on the General Configuration page

Hi SubJunk. I recall trying that and it didnt affect anything.
Right now I'm not in that house where the PS3 is (it's my parents house), so I can't re-test it right away, but I'm certain I gave it a shot because I googled for UMS troubleshooting and found advices about changing UMS port.
I was thinking of installing NetBeans or smth to be able to debug UMS code to see what's up, but I dont think my brother (who owns Win7 PC) would like that, so that's why I was asking for some detailed error-log during "access granted" phase (it should spawn some thread that checks for renderer or smth, but apparently it did not).

Also I recall trying to enabe UPnP in wi-fi router, but that didnt change anything too (it's set back to 'disabled' right now).

Could it be that PS3 can only reach my PC via multicast packets and cannot send packets directly to my IP (because of my unusual network configuration) ? I dont know who is waiting for new packets after "access granted": PS3 or PC.
EDIT: Hm well now that I think about it, "cant connect directly because of unusual network" imo is not the issue here because PS3 can successfully connect to the internet via LAN cable -> Notebook (Win XP) -> wifi router.

If you want more detailed logs you can open your debugging file via the Logs tab. If you want it to be even more detailed you can do what infidel says in his post here and that will give you ultra detail

Okay I've tried TRACE option in the log file.
It appears that "Creating new pipeline" thing, which checks for renderer, does not trigger on Win7 PC, while it does on WinXP notebook.
That's the only thing I could make out of logs ;).
I'm attaching WinXP log first (where it detects PS3).
EDIT: Attaching Win7 log now (doesnt detect PS3).

Question: Why are you using two firewalls?

If your router is using it's built in firewall then it's best just to disable the Windows Firewall service. Using more than one firewall can tend to cause issues. Also, make sure to set port 5001 (or whatever special port you have UMS set to) in your router's port forwarding configuration option if you haven't done so already.

I'd also recommend:
Under General Configuration tab > Network settings (advanced)

For Force networking on interface set that to the network card you're using.
For Force IP of the server set that to the IP of your UMS servers PC.

I'm not using two firewalls, they are disabled.
However your post inspired me to test a few things in Win7 and I think I've found the source of the problem.
I've found out that "Media streaming" option is turned off in Win7. And according to its description, it is actually the first option that should be checked when troubleshooting UMS under this OS imo. I wonder why FAQ doesnt have any info on that one.
I couldn't, however, turn the damn feature ON - I click the button but it doesn't do anything and OK button is still disabled. So I googled "cant turn on media streaming" and found this thread, which, especially spudguy's post, made me certain that disabled "media streaming" is the source of my problem with UMS:
spudguy wrote:I had this same issue, trying to stream to my PS3.

The issue is definitely with the Media Player Setup. You basically need to do a reinstall of the player, and it's pretty easy in Windows 7/WMP12.

Here's how to resolve it:

- Click Start button.
- In the Search field at the bottom, type "Turn Windows features on or off"
- Under Media Features, uncheck the Windows Media Player box, and click Ok
- The system should prompt you to reboot. It will uninstall the WMP.
- When the system has rebooted, go back again through the same process and re-check the Windows Media Player box to re-enable it.
- Now, go back into WMP and you should be able to enable Media Streaming, which was blocked out before.
- If you are trying to connect to PS3, once streaming has been enabled on WMP, just go to the PS3 Search for Media Server option, and it should now find your PC streaming.

Hope this helps people out. This was aggravating until I was able to resolve it this way.
I should note though that even after trying the steps above I could not TURN ON media streaming (same old bug with disabled OK button), but I'm sure I'm on the right track and it's not related to UMS code anymore. My brother (Win7 PC owner) doesnt want to investigate this any further because he doesnt want to enable too many additional features in Win7 for "Media Streaming" to work, so this is probably my last post ;). Just wanted to share the solution.
