[FIXED] Clean install 2.4.1 wont play h264 on BraviaW5500

Post by squadjot »

Hi
EDIT: @2.5.0 This seems to be more of a subtitle problem than h264 problem.. maybe combined..

#BUG: When installing UMS 2.4.0 "clean install", then my BraviaW5500 won't play any h264 files
I know UMS is capable of playing those files it's a matter of settings, i'm just not sure what setting specifically, makes it break.

I tried this on two different computers, so anyone with BraviaW5500 (at least, maybe other bravia users as well) - should be able to reproduce this.

The issue is off course that completely new users to UMS might think it's not working..and discard the program right away.. can't have that 8-)

Btw , while messing with this..some things i noticed.
1. If you change debug level in UI, it does not seem to be saved
2. If you do a clean install, "old" plugins will still be there.. ("clean install" should be clean install.. otherwise please rename the option, like "reset configuration..")
3. OT: OH WHYYYY is UMS.conf files not just located in program folder.. why is there a need to scatter files all over the place?

Why aren't you using the latest build? Is there a bug in 2.4.0 for your specific renderer?

1. Did you hit save after you changed the debug level?
2. If you want a clean install you should uninstall UMS before installing the new one. Make sure you tick "clean install" at the beginning then and it will overwrite the hidden UMS settings directory.
3. Probably because people would accidently delete it. Gotta keep those config files nice and hidden away from people who don't know what they're doing with them. :P

Nope, haven't tried yet. Everything else I've made changes to and hit save after usually sticks. Except for doing anything with PMSE (like changing the order). :P

UMS.conf file is saved to programdata folder because it is the best practices from Vista.
It is because regular user don't have write permissions to program files folder.
When any program is installed UAC will ask you to elevate permissions so write access is granted. But after installation when you will start UMS, there is no elevation so regular user don't have write access to installed Dir. Because of that all apps must use programdata folder where nonadmin can write.
During the weekend I will test new version if external subs have priority or not.
Also will check your debug log.

@SubJunk, I am not sure if it is display bug (spaces/cr/lf instead of "/") or it is wrongly stored in DB? Can't check the code right now:

Code: Select all

It seems MEncoder started with transcoding but after about 54MB the end of the file was reached.
Does the file works without subs but with MEncoder engine? (line starting with [MEncoder] inside TRANSCODE folder) If yes, try to delete old MEncoder font cache which can be incompatible with new MEncoder.

Thanks for looking in to this Exsport
Clearing fontcache worked!, in my case it was located at:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\fontconfig\cache

So, i guess the installer should delete this file to prevent this problem?

Edit: A thing i noticed; engine names appear twice in transcode folder

Sorry.. it didnt fix it.

Completely uninstalled UMS. Downloaded and installed 2.4.1, did clean install.

Started UMS up, and it would not play the file "default", but it does w/o subs in transcode folder.
Then i deleted fontcache (which was not removed on uninstall or cleaninstall)
Restarted UMS, the debug log should show it rebuild the font cache successfully

But the files still does not play.

Note: Also still duplicate filenames in transcode folder

So when was this bug introduced? 2.2.5? So does that mean 2.2.4 does not have it?

Yeah

The setting is described above the tickbox

It is on other operating systems but Windows versions from Vista onwards have made it so that programs can't edit files in the Program Files directory without being run as administrator, and we don't want people to have to run the program as administrator (it's especially annoying if it is set to run on startup)
