UMS and VLC

Post by Madoka »

I remember a post that SubJunk made that VLC support in UMS was still somewhat limited. This was several years ago. I saw a recent commit about VLC and was wondering what the current state of affairs was.

Also, the following is what I am hoping to do. I have never used VLC in UMS so I have no experience with the combo.

I need subtitles almost all the time. If I use VLC as an engine in UMS for subtitles, is it still transcoding and using the buffer for those renders that do not natively support subtitles? If so, then I'm not sure it's better than FFmpeg. If it can make a video on the fly and stream that over, then that would be ideal. I had read that VLC can do some streaming natively...can it stream a video with .ass softsubs to the PS3 or PS4? Or does it only stream the video?

Thanks.
