VLC for Desktop detected as Sony Xperia

Post by Ludo »

I'm testing UMS 6.6.0, for now in virtual machine, and have trouble with correct detection of VLC player. When playing a video file it seems to init transcoding and reporting use of Sony Xperia renderer.

Both host and guest operating systems are Debian 9 and UMS is running in headless mode.

Here's part of console messages

Since I'm running UMS in headless mode, cannot get file by guide provided. Anyway, here's the complete debug.log. Firefox renderer seems to be detected correctly.

Make sure that you run only one instance, as running UMS as a service and a GUI instance at the same time will not work, without any issues at least.

Sony xperia is choosen if nothing better is found, as it's the more similar to your Linux "amd64" string. Yes, this renderer have a weak recognition string, IMO.
To avoid that, you can delete or change the extension of this file in your "renderers" subfolder.
Or you can modify your ums.conf file using the following lines:
# Selected renderers
# ------------------
# A comma-separated list of renderer configurations to load by renderer name as
# defined in the configuration file. Two special values exist, "All renderers"
# and "None". Group names made of the first word in the renderer name can be
# used to specify all renderers in that group, e.g. "Panasonic".
# Example: Yamaha RX-A1010, Panasonic
# Default: "All renderers"
selected_renderers =

# Default renderer when automatic detection fails
# -----------------------------------------------
# UMS can recognize many renderers automatically. Sometimes a renderer will
# connect which UMS does not recognize. This option defines which renderer UMS
# should assume.
# Default: "", which means UMS will assume the "Unknown renderer".
renderer_default =

# Force default renderer (disable automatic detection)
# ----------------------------------------------------
# By default UMS tries to automatically detect what renderers try to connect
# to it. When this is true, UMS will assume any renderer that connects is the
# default renderer.
# Default: false
renderer_force_default =
Or you can add this line to your VLC rendererer:

Code: Select all

LoadingPriority = 2
Note: Your MPlayer install is problematic:
INFO 2017-06-12 09:08:49.341 [mplayer-0] Process mplayer has a return code of 2! Maybe an error occurred... check the log file
DEBUG 2017-06-12 09:09:37.014 [mplayer-2-1] [cplayer] Exiting... (Fatal error)
INFO 2017-06-12 09:09:37.023 [pool-8-thread-2] Process mplayer has a return code of 1! Maybe an error occurred... check the log file
UMS 6.7.1 fixed DVD issue, but it need a working MPlayer installed ;)

Both machines guest and host are on the same network, 192.168.0.8 and subsequently 192.168.0.9. I can discover UMS in VLC but it's not working correctly, so I don't think this is a firewall issue. And I'm running only one instance.

My UMS.conf renderer related part now looks like this

Code: Select all

# ------------------
# A comma-separated list of renderer configurations to load by renderer name as
# defined in the configuration file. Two special values exist, "All renderers"
# and "None". Group names made of the first word in the renderer name can be
# used to specify all renderers in that group, e.g. "Panasonic".
# Example: Yamaha RX-A1010, Panasonic
# Default: "All renderers"
selected_renderers = VLC for desktop

# Default renderer when automatic detection fails
# -----------------------------------------------
# UMS can recognize many renderers automatically. Sometimes a renderer will
# connect which UMS does not recognize. This option defines which renderer UMS
# should assume.
# Default: "", which means UMS will assume the "Unknown renderer".
renderer_default = VLC for desktop
UMS is correctly loading only VLC for desktop renderer according to info messages, but when trying to connect in my VLC it doesn't work at all. When Xperia renderer was detected, it was at least possible to start a transcoded movie, now it doesn't even load database. So to me it seems it's an issue with renderer detection string and renderer config or UMS is not even working with my VLC.

Mplayer is now installed correctly, but didn't solve anything.

MPlayer note, have nothing to do with your issue; i only saw that you was using DVD and will have issue, so i take time to advertise you.

Could you provide a new log with your new ums.conf change ? Thanks.

Yes, it's why i deleted my firewall comment just after having posted it ;)

Trying 6.7.1 version, reporting recognized VLC for desktop but not able to open server in VLC player.

EDIT: tried also Gerbera (former MediaTomb) media server now and there everything seems to work fine (discovery, showing database, playing video, seek, ...).

Sorry, as i'm not an english native, i'm not sure to understood you.
Do you mean that you cannot see UMS in VLC, right ?

As a side note: Don't forget that you'll not being able to see encrypted DVD if you don't install libdvdcss(2) library.

I can see UMS in VLC player. But I cannot play anything from it now.

When it was detecting Xperia renderer - playing transcoded, not possible to seek, ...
When set in config specifically to VLC for desktop renderer - i see server, don't see content, cannot play at all

Here's silent UMS

Re: VLC for Desktop detected as Sony Xperia

Thank you very much for the images 8-)

I hope that you use VLC 3.0.0 beta, as the others are weak when it come to UPnP/DLNA, and our own DLNA implementation being weak, the 3.0.0 should work.
Sometime it can take until 12 mn to display the UMS tree with the 2.x.x version!

I'll compare your logs later.
