UMS does not start anymore on Windows Server 2016

Hello everybody.

DISCLAIMER: I'm quite new to Universal Media Server.

I installed UMS 7.7.1 on a machine running Windows Server 2016.
It was working very well and I watched couple movies using UMS.

Few days ago I was running some updates to the server (Windows Update) and installed them - all good.

Today I realized that the UMS was not at the tray and not running at all, so I tried to start it manually:
- tried to execute it as admin (UMS.exe)
- through powershell (UMS.exe)
- through powershell (UMS.bat)

No luck. Even the GUI does not show up, neither the task manager show anything related to UMS (very, very strange).
There are no log files at (C:\Program Data\UMS\) or (C:\Program Files (x86)\Universal Media Server\).

I spent many hours googling for the problem and decided to open this topic.

----

IMPORTANT:
  • I already tried to disable the firewall completely.
  • I already tried to disable Windows Defender completely.
  • I have JAVA 8 installed (verified through PowerShell, java -version.
  • When running "UMS.bat" (or "UMS.exe") through PowerShell there are no errors, but still the UMS does not start at all.
  • Idk if this matters, but I've installed Hyper V role on the server (virtualization purposes) and it created a Hyper V network adapter.
  • During all the tests I tried to access the WEB "HOST_IP:9001" just to make sure it was not really running (just as a side check).
  • I tried multiple times to uninstall the UMS 7.7.1 and install UMS version 8 (clean install and removing all UMS related folders), no luck.

I am having the same issues. Haven't changed anything since it did work.

Looking at the log, seems it is working, but Windows Media Player says otherwise.

Eventually the systray did pop-up and I am able to open the GUI. :-)
However, Media Player still says there isn't any content on it. ;-(

Windows Media Player has never worked properly with UMS. There is some technical issue, if I recall correctly WMP requires that the server supports "search" but UMS doesn't. You should try using a "real" renderer, or if you must use a software renderer, try VLC or Kodi.
