Overwhelmed and frustrated

Maybe I'm making things to hard on myself, but i've been trying to figure out for 2 days now how to get kodi to work so i can watch my files on my xbox. can someone please dumb down the process and show me what plugins or files i need and how to use them? I'd be very grateful. running a mac with most recent OSX updates and most recent version of UMS

Why do you need Kodi? If UMS and the Xbox 360/One are on the same network that should just work

You need a server with Media - Kodi or UMS
You need a player (also called renderer) - Kodi or Xbox
