Hello!
I'm using UMS version 8.0.1 on macOS Majove 10.14.4
Not sure is it OS related but when i try to add Bulgarian subtitles they are not problem shown. I think the problem is the encoding but i tried with Windows 1251 and ISO-8859-5 /both Cyrillic/.
