Okay, so I looked in my TV manual for my Samsung and it does support external subtitles. However in playing the movie through UMS, I did not get a subtitle option (on/off) in the "Tools" menu. The subtitles would not play, no matter what. Then I tried a USB stick and the subtitles were off by ...

Is the only way to get external subtitles to work by playing video through the Transcode folder?

I am using the current version of UMS and a Samsung SmartTV. If it would help, I can upload debug info.

It sounded like the answer was already clear, but I get it.
As for this problem, well I edited the MKV file and deleted the other audio track so now it only plays in English, so I can no longer troubleshoot.

Why are you on here if you have the knowledge is power attitude, rather than the knowledge is helpful attitude.

I now realize that you didn't need that info to advise me that the file is streamed by default, that streamed files rely on the renderer to do all audio/subtitle selections, and the default audio is wrong (you can't change audio tracks directly on the TV).
