it's a java program, that means whether it's 32 or 64 bit depends on the java version on your computer.

it could also be a simple matter of what the default action is for that file type. try right clicking the script and click something that says "execute" rather than "open".

first and probably most difficult thing is to get all the right dependencies.the install.txt only mentions mediainfo and open-jdk, but other tutorials suggest to install oracles java instead and also dcraw, vlc, mplayer and mencoder. since you're a beginner i'd go for open-jdk. you should be able to ...

not sure what you are trying to achieve here, but i think (depending on the operation system on both servers) an easier solution would be to make a file share on the recording machine and access that from the server machine.

To edit it's config, the config file is located at /usr/ums/UMS.conf
isn't the config location set in this line in the init.d script
UMS_PROFILE=/etc/ums ?
or will it use the one in the install location if there's nothing found at the path given?

according to logback.headless.xml found in the ums installation, it's "either the current directory or (when that is read only) the system temp directory."

you should know that a headless linux (i.e. only command line, no gui) is a lot less straining on the hardware.
