After many clean re-installs of various versions and trying to mess with settings via the UI (not via file changes), I eventually tried version 5.4 and that worked for me. Quite a lot of pain for trying to use a newer version. On the plus side (for UMS), Plex didn't work at all either.

The issue is when I play a video on my Sony Bravia TV from UMS, I get audio but no video, so it's a black screen. I thought it might be a mkv issue, but it's the same thing for mp4 as well. I did install Avisynth.
