Um, I tested it by connecting the server with a wired connection... and it played a whole movie without a hitch.
So I guess it was just the speed of the wifi. sorry for the false alarm.

I guess I will have to buy a powerline adaptor or something. unless there is a way of optimising UMS for wifi in ...
