I'll just leave this here for anybody else, maybe it'll help. I have the software that's called Plays.TV, it's a game capturing software that passively captures footage. This was the culprit. As soon as I shut it down, UMS was totally fine and I couldn't crash it. Hopefully this helps somebody else ...

I updated both my java and my UMS since I started crashing a few days ago on 5.2.3-Java 7. I'm on 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate.
