Have exactly the same problem with a Samsung bd-JM57C.

I have a samsung BD-JM57C and pretty much have the same problem... in the logs say... i try to play a movie i looks like it was loading but nothing at all, I go to check out the activity log console screen thing and it says... movie whatever playing and one second after it says movie stops playing ...

This is a cheap b-ray disc player that supports mkv and other formats.. it supports dnla aswell.

Got this thing time ago and now just playing with it I installed UMS, but im having some troubles with it. Started haing problems listing all the files (I imagine was using the default render... unknown ...
