Noob question - Bravia w series not playing mkvs/mp4s...

And some m4vs.
Installed USM on my iMac and the TV picked up the server straight away but the few files I put in I have had mixed results.
Mkvs not playing. It just sits there on 00:00. Log says it's serving it on the TV but then I get kill -14 on processes.
Same with the mp4 files in the folder. The m4v in there worked so I used handbrake to convert the mkv to m4v but it didn't play.
I assumed that as long as the renderer was available it would display anything the USM would transcode. The mkvs play ok on my ipad.
