Sony BDP-S3100 can't use UMS for Internet Radio

Post by scanf » Sat Mar 15, 2014 3:24 pm

Hi,

I have been previously using PMS successfully for over a year to stream internet radio to my BDP-S3100 (also to my SA-NS310) until the latest firmware update (M14.R.0172).

After latest firmware, I can still play local music and movies, but internet radio is stuffed. This is sad, because that was 99% of what I was using PMS for. Looking for updates, it seems that your project has taken over.

Please note that I can STILL play internet radio using PMS 1.72 and the (very) old mplayer transcoder. So in my mind we have a transcoding incompatibility since the new firmware, which prevents sony devices running their latest firmware to play internet radio from UMS/PMS using any transcoder except mplayer (UMS doesnt use mplayer). i.e. the issue is exactly the same with my SA-NS310 since that devices latest firware update - I can send it mp3 etc but not internet radio of any sort.

Here is a debug log (subnets masked):

What version of VLC do you have installed?

Also its ok to Zip and Add the logs to the thread -- the full output of logs helps.

Well, I was using Linux version 2.03 very well for over a year (with PMS 1.72 and 1.90). It was the cutting edge release at the time. Do I really need to update it? As I said before, these only stopped working with internet radio steaming after the Sony firmware updates, they were just fine before that. Updating it would mean updating the whole box, not justified at this point.

Also I notice that the error itself always seems to be at:
TRACE 2014-03-15 14:06:53.388 [Request Handler] Sending stream with premature end: 131072 bytes of get/0$8$2/Rundfunk+SWR4. Reason: Connection reset by peer

The error shown on the blu-ray says "file is corrupt or music file is unsupported"

After some research it indeed seems that Sony is on a witch hunt against many DLNA media formats, which is probably being implemented in new firmware as well:

Are there some suggestions that you could make for renderers/SonyBluray.conf ?

At this point the most expedient solution definitely seems to be downgrading the bluray firmware.

Sony tries to prevent this, so the following information and tools are obviously NOT supported by Sony and if you brick your blu-ray, well too bad.
All I can say is that it works for him and after following his instructions exactly, it also works for me on the BDP-S3100
So it probably works pretty much for any Sony Blu Ray.

http://www.malcolmstagg.com/bdp-s390-downgrade.html

It is probably important to get the correct old firmware for your country/region, and Sony hides the link - but their server still keeps the file (I used Google cache to get the link for mine). Once you fake the version and timestamps per instruction on web link, the Blu Ray will accept the firmware CD and "update" to the older version (lol). Whole process takes an hour - give or take. Obviously the number of files and names change a little with each FW release, so if you have no instincts or experience with such things then you will need to find another solution.

Afterwards, UMS radio streaming to the BDP-S3100 works just fine (well, like before, ahem).

Sony firmware "upgrades" - such BS. However, this situation should definitely raise a flag as to future compatibility issues between UMS and Sony.

Hi,

From http://www.sony.com.au/support/download/583990 it "provides the following benefits":

BRAVIA Internet Video improvement
Sony Entertainment Network improvement: Opera Apps connectivity
BD-ROM playability improvement

Neither very detailed nor transparent, absolutely nothing mentioned about DLNA - although obviously that functionality was modified as well.
