[Solved] Video is zoomed in a little

Post by AuthenticM »

Hey. I've searched the forums with the local engine and google but didn't find anything. I'm also including my log in case it helps.

Videos being streamed to my TV are zoomed in a little, which hides the edges. This cuts off parts of subtitles sometimes, on top of the image content that I am losing. I have checked the settings of UMS but didn't find anything. Is there a way to fix this ?

Thank you.

When you play the video on your Mac, does it too show the subtitles being cut off?

When you play a blu-ray on your PS3, does it have the same result?

Off that same TV, do channels from your Cable/Sat provider have the same result?

I'm trying to alleviate a hardware issue, were possibly the TV's setting is set to strech or pan/scan or somthing...

I haven't played a blu-ray disc on this tv in a while, but I don't recall it being cut off like this. It also works fine on my computer. When popping up the menu with the triangle button (I'm streaming to my PS3) while a file is being played and changing the view mode, you can notice just how much image is being lost. See the attachments. Notice the antenna on the top of the tank, the "7" on the bottom right of the image and the triangle motifs on the bottom left. Compare the two images.

Of course, it goes without saying that I am interested in watching videos in full screen. It's not a big deal as I can still read the subtitles, but depending on where they are on the screen, sometimes letters will be offscreen. It would be preferable if this didn't happen.

edit: christ, is there a way to downsize these ?

I see what your talking about.. and what's the resolution of the Video? Im wondering if the first resolution is set to something other than "1920" (1080p/i) or "1280" (720i/p)...

Use mediainfo: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mediainfo/

For example:

haha on your comment to the size of the picture...

i use an image hosting solution like imageshack.us or the one thats tied to my Snagit screencapture app - screencast.com

those usually offer a size reduction or thumbnail version of the uploaded video.

The videos are in 1280x720, but that shouldn't really matter. This happens for every video I stream, regardless of resolution. And this does not happen with games I play on this TV; I get the full picture. Which is why I believe that UMS is the culprit.

I dont think it matters but I noticed that there are some French files that UMS is finding. Is your Mac set to French Language? if so, is the default language in UMS french?

I think this should be reviewed by Subjunk nothing in the logs or UMS.conf look out of place.

and nothing is set weird on your PS3?

All of my computer devices are set to French and I seriously doubt that this has anything to do with display problems. Nothing is set weird on my PS3. When I googled the problem the other day, I came across a two-year old thread on the PS3MediaServer forums seemingly about the same problem as mine, but nobody answered it.

Do you have a PS3 ? Do you not have this problem with it ? It is really perplexing me.
