[Solved] UMS 9.0 hangs on splash screen (Win10)

I recently had upgraded Zulu Java on my system from something like version 11 or 12 to version 13 (which seemed to be working perfectly) before I restarted it (for nominal Windows Update maintenance) and found UMS hanging on the "loading..." splash screen. (I think I had been running an older version of UMS than 9.0, which I originally installed sometime this past August). After trying to reinstall both Zulu Java and UMS several times with no success, eventually I uninstalled Zulu Java completely before uninstalling and then reinstalling UMS 9.0 once again. No change to the problem: UMS hangs on the splash screen and doesn't appear to be doing anything (like I/O or CPU) in the Windows task manager. It's simply hung, with no way to get into the application itself - as all that's visible is the splash screen!

I guess my next step is to try to remove UMS 9.0 and then reinstall an older version of UMS, which I had working very successfully before this recent problem.

Any thoughts and suggestions for diagnosing and resolving this problem would be welcome!

System environment:
Windows 10 Pro (all Microsoft maintenance applied)
Intel i7-5820k, 32GB memory, Rx-480 (8GB), multiple terabytes of free disk space

Backing out to UMS version 8.2.0 fixed it... I've turned OFF automatic update checking now.

I have the exact same problem except for the following difference: I am running Windows 7 Pro 64bit

Here's what happens in my case (and this has happened twice because I uninstalled it once and re-installed it).

Immediately upon installation completion, UMS 9.0 loads and works flawlessly. It allows me to configure it as per my preferences for all user settings. UMS then runs fine and can be shut down and re-launched any number of times and it loads and runs fine.

However, once the computer is either rebooted or shut down, UMS then never runs. All I see is the splash screen with "Loading...." and nothing else. In the Task Manager, there is no UMS activity except for java.

I am attaching my debug file for your inspection (UMS Ver 9.0.0 ums_dbg.zip)

Thanks in advance for your assistance with this issue.

p.s. I originally thought that UMS ver.9.0 only runs three times and then does not. This is incorrect because both times I noticed this, I had shut down the computer over-night and then found that UMS would not run anymore and it happened to be the fourth time.

I tried UMS Version 9.0.1 This version also has the same problem.

I am sure it is not a firewall issue as my Windows Firewall is turned off and I am not running any other firewall programs. I doubt that Windows Defender is the culprit either (that is the only ant-virus program on this computer).

There is no reason to suspect the firewall or antivirus software when UMS won't start. The firewall is most often the cause when UMS starts fine, but can't be found by renderers. This is probably caused by some issue/bug with the embedded Java, since this is new in UMS 9.0 as far as I understand. I haven't tested it myself, so I don't know the details of how this has been done.

I was already suspecting that Java was involved with this problem and I just found out that it is actually the cause.

I have resolved the problem for myself by un-installing my installed Java version. Even though both my current standalone installation of Java and the one included in UMS were the same version UMS did not work with it.

So what happens is when UMS is just installed, it forces itself to use its embedded Java but after a computer restart, it won't run as the standalone version of Java takes precedence.

For myself, uninstalling the standalone instance of Java is not an issue because I use my machine primarily for UMS. However, this solution may not be advisable for others who may have other applications that depend on the standalone version of Java.

That sounds like a reasonable problem description, and I'd say that the UMS devs must look at how to make sure that the "correct" Java version is used.

I'm having a similar problem on Windows 7. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling both Java and UMS to no effect, still just hangs on "loading".

In response to -ehn0r,

The solution that worked for me was to uninstall Java from the Windows Programs menu in Control Panel and not re-install it. This is because I use a dedicated computer only to run Universal Media Server.

So if you can do without a standalone installation of Java, meaning that you do not have any applications other than UMS that need Java then un-install it and do not re-install it. UMS will then use its embedded version of Java.

This is a temporary fix until UMS Developers can fix the conflicting Java instances.

We have recently fixed one cause of this so I'm marking this as solved, please let us know if it is still occurring
