[Solved] Samsung UHD 2019 - mkv not playing (EAC3) - transcode

Post by Sefer »

Hey there

I have an Samsung UE43RU7179UXZG. For testing purposes (and it didn't work with the official 9.1.0 either) I made a build on the latest source. Unfortunately one test movie still doesn't play. The mkv has a black thumbnail. In the TRANSCODE folder are several 0 byte files which are not played. Another "not transcoded" file is present there, too which is being played (asking myself why the original file doesn't play then) with video and sound working.

How do I enable transcoding of problematic files? Do I understand something wrong there?

Attached you can find the full debug log with the file being scanned, the original file tried to be played, all transcode-files being played except 2 and the non-transcoded one at the end. I hope you can help me find the error.

This is a fresh setup with close to zero config except an IP-Whitelist and a small subtitle setup. No firewall config being made since the connection to the server worked out of the box.

Re: Samsung UHD 2019 - mkv not playing (EAC3) - transcode

Post by atamariya »

When a particular files doesn't play, it indicates a supporting line is missing in the renderer config file. You can try adding the line and share it here so that it may be included in the code to help others having the same renderer. In most cases however, it is just easier to browse into the transcode folder and pick a combination that does work. Transcode folder lists all possible combinations of codec that UMS thinks are supported by the renderer.

Hey there, and how can I find out which line is missing? Where should I start? Which stuff can or should I add to test this? The renderer config file is "Samsung-UHD-2019.conf" in my case then, correct?

As I have written, none of the files in the transcode folder are working except the not-transcoded one. I always get an network error or another one. Which I find is weird because the original file should work then, too. I mean, it isn't transcoded anyways. But it looks like it doesn't play properly somehow (kind of microlags or short scene-shadows). It somehow doesn't feel correct.

Hi Sefer,
Thanks for the logs. Unfortunately they need to be made in TRACE mode to be useful. Instructions are at https://www.universalmediaserver.com/fo ... ?f=9&t=556

Thanks for your reply. It seems like this was an issue due to the subtitle settings. I totally misunderstood how they work and the guide was a bit confusing at first. Looks like I got that corrected now. I was wondering why it played in TRACE mode now and remembered I played with the settings two days ago.

I remember that sometimes subtitles are wrong or language could be picked wrong in VLC if i.e. I say "Deutsch" prefered for audio but it is "German" instead, so another audio line is being played instead. Same for subs. That's why I tried to cover everything but it all comes down to the 3-letter-code here :-)

For this one file it is working properly now. When I find one which isn't I have to open a new proper thread. Thanks for the instructions for creating the log properly!

Code: Select all

diff -r ums_dbg/UMS.conf ums_dbg_new/UMS.conf
1757,1759c1757,1760
< subtitles_languages = ger,german,de,deutsch,eng,fre,jpn,ger,und
< audio_subtitles_languages = ger,german,de,deutsch,eng,off;*,eng;*,und
< forced_subtitle_language = de
---
> subtitles_languages = ger,eng,und
> audio_subtitles_languages = ger,off;*,ger;*,und
> forced_subtitle_language = ger
> audio_languages = ger,eng,und
Anyways, attached the trace log because the files in the transcode folder cannot be played anyways except the not-transcoded one.

EDIT: Do you know whether there is a list view or only the grid view on Samsung TV? Hard to navigate and didn't find an answer but probably the latter, right.

Thanks for confirming it is working. I really want to make a better GUI with dropdowns for the subtitles options. Maybe one day :)
