"Can not play Audio" on Smart TV

Post by Falkthewolf »

Hi,

I got a problem with my UMS and my Smart TV since a long time.

Like 90% of the time i try to start a 1080p or 2160p movie with DTS on my Samsung UE43RU7179UXZG 4k Smart TV through UMS I get the error message "could not play audio".
If I try to start the movie through the underfolder with the seperate lines and start for example the english dub line directly I get "Network error" message.

So i tryed to search on google and here for a solution of this.
Found something about checking the dts audio codec box in the transcode settings but this did not help :(

Maybe somebody knows whats the deal here.
If i start 720p Files I have none such problems.
And maybe it helps to add that the TV is directly connected via Cable to my Router and same goes for PC.

I´m really depressed about this.
Wanted to watch James Bonn Casino Royal today for a relaxing evening but did not work.

Sry thought I had done this.
Here is one.

Note to the logs, color out of space did work with 1080p without problem, but all other listed movies did not.

I had look on google for specs on your TV and it doesn't support DTS, which would make sense you would get the error message "could not play audio".
UMS is correctly identifying that and is transcoding the file to MPEGTS-H264-AC3, however looks like it has no support for Dolby at all so AC3 won't work either.

I have modified the config to remove AC3 as supported and transcoding to MPEGTS-H264-AAC instead, hopefully that will work for you

I have given it a higher priority so this config should be used instead of the included one, Just copy it to the renderers directory in UMS (C:\Program Files (x86)\Universal Media Server\renderers).

"color out of space" has AAC audio which matches as supported so it is streamed

First of all thx for your help.
I tried this cfg file but with no luck.
Now i get a "unexpected error" message if i try to start it.
I just attached a new debugfile.

But good to know that my tv does not support DTS and AC3.
And i thought i could do nothing wrong with buying a Samsung TV.

Little Update.

I fixed the problem kinda.

I googled a bit about the problem with the DTS on my TV and found out that there is a Media Server who should work with DTS.
I just installed me Plex and it now works like a charm.
If I read it right, it converts the DTS/AC3 into AAC flawless.

Now all of my files are working and I can watch on my couch on my TV.
So after 5 years of using UMS/PS3 MS I changed it^^

But I´m open to test it further with UMS if there is something else what could fix it.

It is strange that it isn't supported. My 2013 Samsung does. Maybe that model is on the lower end and to save costs they never bought the licences to use Dolby

That should happen with UMS too, just need to get the config right. If you manage to get it working then the config can be updated for the next version of UMS.

At least at the moment UMS is correctly detecting what to transcode, just not exactly to what your TV can understand. @Nadahar knows more about the transcoding side of things. If I remember there are several options to keep AC3 and DTS tracks in the transcoding settings. make sure anything that mentions them are disabled and see if that helps

There's no way to transcode to multichannel AAC in UMS as far as I know. When it comes to some manufacturers dropping DTS etc, it's all down to licensing. Dolby and DTS (and others) are quite greedy and requires hefty license fees for devices to be able to decode "their" codecs. As a consequence, it seems like support for these are going to be less and less. They might have upped their licensing fees for all I know, or maybe the manufacturers just don't think that many of their customers need this. It wouldn't hurt if they informed about it though...
