Re: UMS 10.6-10.8.2 Suuuuuuuuuuper Unstable

Post by SubJunk »

I'm going to make an issue on our bugtracker to add a log-splitting feature, but I don't think that is related to these problems.
So to summarise our findings so far, 10.5.0 is working well, except for big logs and stuttering on one file, and we are waiting to get the comparison logs for 10.6.0 or later - or do we already have all the logs we need now?
Is that right?

Startropic1 wrote: Wed Aug 18, 2021 8:16 am As for my TV, I wager it reconnected itself. The mechanism in its GUI for handling network connections is very NOT intuitive, most notably that there is NO direct way to disable a connection. There is no list of my connections from where I can just delete the thing. (Very stupid, I will try to do a firmware update of my TV.) I can always go to the nuclear option and edit the .conf for my TV in UMS and make it do nothing.
editing the conf for the TV would do nothing as it would still be on the network and making requests. One thing you could do is change your wireless password then there will be no way it can reconnect.

@Subjunk I guess everything you need to see why the TV is acting that way is in those logs.

Oops. I found the correct logs. Attached.
I looked through this log file and I can see one file was attempted to play, S01E01 of What If (2021), on the PS4. Did that stutter?

I am just trying to match logs with the stuttering bug

@Nadahar Just remembered that the log viewer I'm using can partially open a log so I got the full request/response section for 1 file from the last 10mb of my split file.
Hope you can find a clue in that.

For our records, that file has this media info:

Code: Select all

Which gets transcoded, because the audio codec E-AC3 is not supported by the PS4.

At that point we measured the PS4 speed:

Code: Select all

Renderer PlayStation 4 has an estimated network speed of 8.244860952380952 Mb/s
Then we send this command to FFmpeg to transcode it:

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Universal Media Server\win32\ffmpeg64.exe" -y -loglevel info -i E:\TestLibrary\What.If.2021.S01E01.1080p.WEB.H264-EMPATHY[rartv]\What.If.2021.S01E01.1080p.WEB.H264-EMPATHY.mkv -bufsize 8000k -maxrate 7000k -crf 23 -ab 448k -c:a ac3 -c:v copy -f mpegts \\.\pipe\ffmpegvideo_78_1628699449118
which just copies the video stream without transcoding, but transcodes the audio and remuxes to MPEG-TS, which is all ideal.

The bitrate for the video stream is 6574594 with a maximum of 12749952 so that may be pushing the limits of your Wi-Fi speed

Re: UMS 10.6-10.8.2 Stuttering videos

Ok after using 1.8.2 for a bit we're back to the stability issues that prompted me to start this thread. I have added a new set of logs from 1.8.2 to the mega folder, (the log.prev was a whopping 3GB, although the main log is only a couple MB so that at least is much more manageable.)

Mega link once again: https://mega.nz/folder/KjAixRoT#U6KBcSOCFQNVGsr4DIMB0g

1.8.2 seems to be a resource hog for some reason. Although I don't see a big difference in task manager as far as RAM, usage for UMS but the PC is noticeably slowed down when I start UMS 1.8.2. It also constantly freezes, (the program not the streaming videos), and I have to kill it in task manager and restart it because it froze and/or the PS4 stopped being able to read it properly.

I will certainly explore the possibility that other things unrelated to UMS are causing the slow down on my PC, but it's odd the performance difference between 1.5.0 and 1.8.2. At the same time, the test library continues to slowly grow. While we can't ignore that as a variable, it's still not all that big. I might do a test with 1.8.2 using a super tiny test library.

Playback of video streams has actually been fine, it's just that 1.8.2 will freeze (on the PC application side) after about 2 videos; the library can't be read properly, I have to go kill UMS in the task manager, and restart it.

I do also continue to try to get my stupid TV off my wifi....with mixed results.

Looks like exactly the same. I guess the main log this time is small as it was not running very long.

You need to figure out how to kick your TV off the network If we can confirm that as the cause or if there are other issues.
I tried looking at it's manual online but did not see anything helpful, but one part mentions it uses a wireless dongle (may be a different model). You could just remove it.

Another way would be to log in to your router and change the wireless password then it cannot use it.

Just thought of another way that may work but is something I have not used. You could set up an IP filter to only allow connection from your PS4 or Xbox.
On the general settings tab set "Use an IP filter (whitelist)" to "192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.13" and this will only allow access to the PS4 and Xbox (going by the IPs in your log)

If that works could you post new logs?

The devs are looking into why this could be happening and could be related to another issue that was happening to someone else. I believe it had something to do with getting metadata for music but not sure.
I think there may be a test build ready soon for you to try but have no ETA.
Logs are important for us to help, Please follow This Link before asking for support. Just a forum cleaner, Will help if I can but no expert.

Two things to possibly look into:
- LG TV (webOS), WMP, VLC and XBox 360 are problematic renderers. They ask for complete media tree. So it's better to turn off UMS media library for them.
- I think there was a recent change for SystemUpdateID. If SystemUpdateID changes, renderers will ask for an updated version of the tree. If this happens frequently, UMS will be perpetually busy.

The log.prev (all 3+GB of it) is included in the zip so maybe there is more useful info in there. Are we sure the metadata issue is exclusive to music? Video files also have metadata and whatnot.

The primary issues at play in 1.8.2 are core stability (or lack thereof) on the application (windows) side. Like I said, it doesn't seem to be using any more RAM than previous versions. I wonder if it's related to db processing...

How do I disable media library? I can't find this anywhere in the main panel, and I do have advanced options enabled.

The UMS devs have decided that they don't care about those that don't use the "media library", and has removed the setting from the GUI to make it difficult to disable. I don't remember what the setting is called in the configuration file, but it might be "use_cache" or something like that. I don't think it's called "media library" in the configuration file.

I don't really thing UMS will work very well with it disabled in V10, so if you want to use UMS without the media library, I would revert to V9.
