Subtitle Causing Crashing + Forcing Transcode

Hey all!
I'm having some weird issues playing files with subtitles on my SMP-N200. Whenever MP4s with subtitles are played it will crash the player. It won't even load the file, it'll just hard lock it. What I found is that of course if I disable subtitles the media will play flawlessy.
What I also notice is that the files which are marked as having "timed text" (subtitles) by mediainfo will have an *Asterik next to them (meaning it's going to transcode it I believe, correct?) but when I turn the subtitles off the * will not be there and the file will once again play fine.
i'm not sure if this problem has been there all along and I just now noticed, but I have tried 3.4.1 3.4.2 and went back to 3.32 with the same exact problem. I don't believe this is an issue on other players, but I only have a SMP-N200 that I use UMS to stream to currently.
