5.1 48Khz FLAC can not be played on PS3 with UMS

Post by zephyrot »

Hello.

Good day to you all.

I have found that I'm unable to play 5.1 - 48 Khz FLAC with UMS (PMS doesn't play them either) in all versions that I have checked.
In fact, I do not think that this issue is caused by UMS, most probably is the lack of audio formats supported by PS3 itself.
Let me give you a brief background about this.

I have been using Subjunk PMS build for a long time before moving to UMS since I'm quite satisfied with his
good job with this software, never had a single problem.

A few weeks ago I put my hands over a certain soundtrack of certain PS3 game.
The soundtrack has been extracted with a certain method from the game itself, so
it's 5.1 instead of the usual stereo crap and it's 48 Khz, not 96 Khz as many flac files that I could find around.

As I have a few 48 Khz stereo FLAC from other amazon purchases, I tried to play them with the same UMS version and
they worked sucesfully, but the 5.1 flac files fail directly with an "incompatible media" error on PS3.

Please, someone could confirm my suspicions?.
I think that PS3 can not play 5.1 audio files, only video (and thus I would have to convert my flac to MKV files with some video or static image on it).

If you think that these files deserve to be played as audio without the hassle of transcoding to video, let me know.
I will pack all the debug files so you can check it as per your heart's content.

Additionally, I have noticed the following things:

A) Mplayers tries to transcode them as 2 channels, instead of 5.1 I have seen this in UMS debug.
B) PS3 seems more willing to play these files when I select "48 Khz" rather than "44,1 /172 .... Khz" option on XMB audio properties,
it reachs up to the music player screen (where you see earth or the other interactive backgrounds), but no audio is coming from it,
and it looks like if it were paused instead of playing (timer doesn't count).

Just for your reference, my PS3 fat is in latest official firmware and I have an Onkyo 5.1 amp connected through HDMI to PS3, so yes,
I could enjoy 5.1 soundtracks if able to play them. I do not use "bitstream" settings on my PS3 since it's the fat version, although my Onkyo
do supports Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD streams.

Thank you very much in advance for reading such boring post.

(Sorry for the multiple editions to the original post, the more I think and test about it, the more things I found related)

Sorry, this was the proper way to report about this. It took me a while to realize about it.
Find the links to the following:

A) UMS 2.3.0 debug log with Ffmpeg: https://mega.co.nz/#!205wiCwB!CnLPwCruA ... BS4eBAYmh4
B) UMS 2.3.0 debug log with Mplayer: https://mega.co.nz/#!uphBHZAQ!Knv_2TTmN ... _fnzrIQZgo
C) Sample song: https://mega.co.nz/#!igglDJ5D!Sj7zwnOUi ... iJtp0D1iH0

The exact issue is "UMS can not transcode the above multichannel 48 Khz flac audio file to a playable format on PS3 (PS3 error: Media is incompatible).
Surely, it's not UMS fault at all.

Thanks for your patience.

There is a patch for FLAC files but not sure it will help you.
Anyway @SubJunk should incomporate it as it is a bug in current code 8-)

Recompiling (thanks to UMS-builder). Now it's too late at night for testing, I will check tomorrow and report back.

Thanks @SharkHunter, @ExSport and @Subjunk.

Hello again.

I have tested today with a freshly generated UMS (with UMS builder), but I still
receive "incompatible media" on PS3 when trying to play the file (see attached debug).

I did notice the following:

A) If you choose "Audio High fidelity" as transcoding engine, it does not seem to obey, as file is transcoded with
previous selection (either ffmpeg or Mplayer).

You can simulate this by choosing, by example, ffmpeg, save config, quit UMS. Start UMS, choose "audio high fidelity",
save, quit UMS and start UMS again. File will try to be transcoded with "ffmpeg".

If you do the same steps as before, but choosing "mplayer" first, file will be transcoded with "mplayer" instead.
I did notice that because I have disabled the option "hide transcode engine names"

Note: I have set "flac" extension to force transcode (I have same result, either if force transcode is enabled or not).

B) The flac file is never shown on "Video" XMS option, neither as a file, neither as a transcoding folder.
I have copied a "fake.jpg" file in every UMS folder and subfolder I found, but without luck.
It doesn't matter what transcoding engine mix and match you make on UMS settings.

Btw, I don't have installed Avysynth on my computer.

C) Mplayer tries to transcode the file to stereo, as per debug files.

DEBUG 2013-03-08 21:52:58.534 [Thread-23] AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 6 ch, s16le, 1951.6 kbit/42.35% (ratio: 243956->576000)
DEBUG 2013-03-08 21:52:58.553 [Thread-23] AO: [pcm] 48000Hz 2ch floatle (4 bytes per sample)

But this part might be reasonable, as PS3 can not play multichannel audio files.
Shouldn't Mplayer sucesfully transcode the file to standard stereo channel format (and frustrate my multichannel lust)?.
It might be an Mplayer bug.

D) Off this topic: This latest compile does not show computer name at the right of Universal Media Server on XMS.
It is very noticeable, because my wife laptop also has UMS, so name helped us to tell them apart.
This worked fine in 2.5.0

Thank you all in advance, and keep the good job.
I really enjoy this fine piece of software.

old topic i know...but I REALLY need a hand here !

HOW on earth can i stream a movie that has 5.1 FLAC ?? everything i do gives me AC3 on my receiver !
i ticked using LPCM as audio : receivers gets AC3
i used ticked/untickied AC3 & Dts on ums: receivers gets AC3

i changed settings on ps3 and Mede8er (i use 2 renderers...): receivers gets AC3

i tried everything ! is it even possible to get FLAC to stream via UMS :?:

If the video is not supported by renderer than is always transcoded to formats explained in PS3.conf

Code: Select all

# TranscodeVideo: Profile to use for transcoding video files.
# One of the following:
#
# Profile Video Audio Container
# ----------------------------------------------------
# MPEGPS-MPEG2-AC3 MPEG-2 AC-3 MPEG-PS
# MPEGTS-MPEG2-AC3 MPEG-2 AC-3 MPEG-TS
# MPEGTS-H264-AC3 H.264 AC-3 MPEG-TS
# MPEGTS-H264-AAC H.264 AAC MPEG-TS
# WMV: WMV 2 (WMV 8) WMA 2 ASF
#
# These profiles are supported by the MEncoder, FFmpeg and VLC engines.
# Default: MPEGPS-MPEG2-AC3
TranscodeVideo = MPEGPS-MPEG2-AC3

# TranscodeAudio: Profile to use for transcoding audio files
# Currently supported: "LPCM", "MP3" or "WAV".
# Default: LPCM
TranscodeAudio = LPCM
If video is supported by your renderer and renderer also supports FLAC you can try to add "flac" to audio option in your renderer.conf e.g. "Supported = f:mp4 v:mp4|h264 a:ac3|flac m:video/mp4". Please try it and give us the result.

hi there valib; yes my renderer in case of mede8er support natively mkv and flac....
i always use the realtek conf file (which looks much simpler compared to the ps3 conf  ) as my chip is a realtek, but i tweaked it to make it more "Mede8er" with help here.

I will get home tonight and do what you said and report - thanx :ugeek:

juste to be sure my flac videos are MKv's so what you suggested should be:
"Supported = f:mp4 v:mkv|h264 a:ac3|flac m:video/mkv" right :?:
