800228E1 This content cannot be played - VobSub

Post by tuathaan »

Hi,

I'm completely at a loss. Recently got a 3D Tv so I started looking into playing 3D movies through my PS3.

PMS has been working for me for years but decided to switch over to UMS as it is still supported. No problem, everything still works fine. Until I stumble upon a problem with subtitles for my newly DLed 3D-movies. All these years I've been using .srt for subtitles but quickly learned that this doesn't work with 3D. So I find myself a movie that includes the .sub and .idx files I need. (I also tried createing new ones using 3D subtitles) Only neither PMS nor UMS wants to play these types of subs for me. I can play the movie with any encoder, they all work fine, as long as I stay away from the VobSub ones. I go back to a non-3D movie with an .srt subtitle and it turns out that VobSub options for this movie doesn't work either. Same deal here, any encoder combination works as long as I stay away from VobSub. DVDrip? (not sure if this is the right name) option always works. Doesn't work for 3D however (since the subtitles will be jumbled).

Anyhow, there's a lot of blind trial and error between then and now so to make a long story short:
UMS refuses to play my mkv movie with .sub/idx files I need to subtitle a 3D-movie properly. I have installed K-Lite Codec Pack (a recommendation from an old thread) and have the latest version of UMS. I've also tried every hack's suggestion available through google, including things like removing any *.chache-3 files and rebooting. As per the stickied topic, attached is the trace debug log. All I get is "This content cannot be played (800228E1)".

Godspeed.

I've kept trying for two nights now and still no clue as to where the problem might be coming from. Is it UMS not being able to handle 2 files for subs or is it the subs that are defect? I've tried 3 different ones for 3 different movies so it seems unlikely. Also, the message that I get from the error log seems to indicate that the files are not supported by UMS.

Any ideas?

3D subs are supported since the version 4.2.0. Details on how to make sure we detect the right 3D format are in our FAQ. So you need to rename your 3D movies and use .srt subs and UMS will convert that subs to the 3D format. They are working with FFmpeg but not with AviSynth/MEncoder

Thank you sooo much valib for putting me on the right path! <3

I don't fully understand everything yet but here's what happened:
I've read the FAQ before and tried the file name change part but I think I've only tried it with Avisynth/MEncoder and .idx/.sub subtitles. Updating the file names and switching to .srt and FFmpeg solved it for me for one file. The other movie, although renamed the same way and with .srt subtitles, did not work with FFmpeg. It did, however, work with MEncoder.

So, I'm still not sure why it sometimes works with some converters and sometimes not, but I've only tested on 2 files yet. I'll fill in more info when I've a large sample.
