Cambridge Audio CXR200 AVR not processing DTS PCM signal via PS3
Hi guys,
I'm a bit at a loss here, and hoping someone can help revolve this issue I'm having.
So I just bought a new AVR - a Cambridge Audio CXR200. As usual, I lined up my test movies & music: a DTS copy of Sicario, hi-res FLAC of Dire Straits & Manu Katche, and Pulse Live DVD.
Strangely, it did not accept the PCM DTS signal from my PS3: I am just getting loud white noise when trying to play DTS movies via UMS. This is something which both my previous AVRs (NAD & Arcam) had absolutely no issues with.
I can only get sound if I disable the DTS stream on the UMS, it's almost as if the CXR cannot decode DTS stream if it is coming in via PCM, which is impossible as it supports all the various formats. I have changed the PS3 output to bistream, no change.
So I tested a bit more last night, and none of my MKV movies with DTS are playing sound. However, BluRays with DTS, DTS-HD, and DTS-MA are playing fine, so I don't understand what is going on.
Is there maybe a setting on UMS that I can tweak to make the PCM signal play as before?
anyone have any suggestions?
thanks

Re: AVR not processing DTS PCM signal via PS3
Guys, a quick question:
The Help/Wiki states the following:
"Keep DTS audio in stream
This enables playback of DTS digital surround sound via optical digital audio output (toslink) of your PS3. Keep in mind that this increases network traffic. Your AV-receiver or amplifier needs an integrated DTS-decoder for playback."
but when you hover over the 'Keep DTS' option, the following is shown, which is a bit different as it includes HDMI as well:
so, which is correct? Is DTS only supported via optical or via both optical and HDMI?

Re: AVR not processing DTS PCM signal via PS3
I've gone through a test of all the possible permutations, please see attached screenshot.
Something very interesting happened, which I discovered completely by chance: if I switch the Audio input during the playback (from Optical to HDMI), the DTS stream comes through fine. If I stop and restart playback, it's back to the white noise. Switching the input from HDMI to something else and back to HDMI during playback results in the DTS stream coming through again.
So it would seem something very weird is going on with the HDMI when trying to play a PCM stream containing DTS.

finally found an answer here by trawling through the forums: viewtopic.php?t=1694
Basically its a limitation of the SPDIF standard being used to wrap the DTS or Dolby audio in 2 Ch LPCM. Its limited to 1.5Mbit, roughly the size of a 5.1 Ch DTS core stream.
As for the different encoders, FFmpeg doesn't seem to work with audio passthrough so its encoding the DTS core into Dolby, sending to your PS3 and PS3 processes and sends PCM to your Receiver.
MEncoder shows its behaving correctly, wrapping DTS core in LPCM. PS3 reads it as 2 Ch LPCM and passes it through untouched to your Receiver where its correctly recognized as 5.1 Ch DTS.
