I CAN NEVER EVER UNPAUSE ANY VIDEOS
I can't UNPAUSE any videos, I think I never could since I installed this thing almost 10 years ago !!!!
I'm tired of restarting this server, clean reinstalling, updating, whatever.. it doesn't matter, it won't simply resume playing a simple video !!!
Look how it started streaming ok but then after pausing and unpausing it tries to transcode (WHO ASKED IT TO?) and the video is simply frozen forever. And my cpu is with high % being used to transcode nothing to.. nothing! Because I'm not seeing anything!!!

Re: I CAN NEVER EVER UNPAUSE ANY VIDEOS
oh nice now "net.pms.io.BufferedOutputFileImpl" is filling my .log with a lot of numbers. debug.0000.log is 230mb already
Re: I CAN NEVER EVER UNPAUSE ANY VIDEOS
now it's crashing before I can get the logs
Re: I CAN NEVER EVER UNPAUSE ANY VIDEOS
I managed to remove the trash from log and zip it. It's still trying to transcode even with "Disable all transcoding" checked, but ONLY if I try to unpause a video or seek. It does work fine when starting from the beginning..
The most annoying thing is that I have to restart the server so it can work again after this happens, or else it stays like in a loop using my cpu to transcode the video (but not showing anything on the TV)

Re: I CAN NEVER EVER UNPAUSE ANY VIDEOS
Turning off the resume option in UMS should fix this so the TV can handle resuming itself.
It is in the Navigation section of the settings called "Enable video resuming"
This feature is for those older devices that had no play history so could not request to continue from the last played point.
To allow resuming for these UMS has to transcode the file from the last played position so it appears as a new virtual file to do this.
I think what is happening is when a video is paused on your TV it is effectively stopped to UMS, so when you un-pause UMS thinks this is a new play request and tries to resume from the last point by transcoding so that explains the CPU usage. As the video is still technically playing on the TV the new transcoded stream has nothing to receive it so it is getting sent to nothing, and the TV will not get any more data direct from the first stream to continue playing.
The spam you got in the new log may be due to this data having nowhere to go which quickly filled the logs with similar messages.
This resume option really should be set to off as default instead of on as it is not needed on modern TVs. I'll ask if this can be changed.
Ideally nothing should need to be transcoded but I can see 2 videos that will need to be transcoded due to the format not being supported.
Avatar uses PGS subtitles which is not supported but otherwise can be played, you will just lose the subtitles for the foreign language parts if it is streamed.
Using an external sub file should help in this case to avoid transcoding.
Jurassic.World uses dtshd for the audio and is not listed as supported, but you can try playing from the transcode folder and chose no transcoding to see if it will play or not to confirm. If it does then the conf file can be updates to add this as supported.
There is currently work being done to improve transcoding on the LG TVs (some is in 14.8 just announced) so these should work normally if transcoding is needed.

Re: I CAN NEVER EVER UNPAUSE ANY VIDEOS
Oh god. It worked. But it never appeared as a new file to me.. And if it's known that my TV can ask at which point the video was, why there isn't an option in its profile (or renderer as you call) to disable this workaround? It completely destroyed my experience with ums since I first download it in 2016
Re: I CAN NEVER EVER UNPAUSE ANY VIDEOS
The TV probably was not aware of the resume file as it needs to request a new filelist to see it, but it keeps a cache of the last time this was requested and does not know it has changed. This has been a similar problem with thumbnails not updating, mainly on Samsung TVs.
I think this option should be a renderer option instead of a general option now.
It might just be a relic of when UMS was PMS for just the PS3 which was very limited in the things we take for granted these days.
I'll make the suggestion that this should be changed.

Re: I CAN NEVER EVER UNPAUSE ANY VIDEOS
Just found out there is an option you can put in the conf to disable resuming but I don't think it is used in any conf, at least none I have seen.
I still think the logic of this default setting should be reversed though.
UMS should only transcode when playing the virtual resume file so there may be a bug in this feature.

Code: Select all

# has its own built-in resume/continue/bookmark functionality, like Samsung and LG TVs have.
