I have tried a number of options to generate an extract but nothing has worked so far. The entire series can be purchased in BluRay for $30 - see http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Earth-Comp ... vd_twister. There are a number of scenes that provide an excellent benchmark.

Did you try putting the binaries (ffmpeg.exe, mplayer.exe and mencoder.exe) from 2.3.0 into 2.4.2? It would be nice to know whether it's the binaries or not
