Thx for your help.....what I want to achieve is for subs to be displayed for 'non english' audio, whether it be french, german, italian, nabu, klingon, etc. once i have UMS set up correctly I would assume ripping a film with any sub rather than a forced sub, (which sometimes appears) would display 'non english audio' as a sub.

I hope that makes sense......

Ok, if your native audio is ENG and you want to play eng subs for foreign language parts, UMS have to know what subs are "forced" and what subs are "full". It means setting "eng,off;*,eng" will say UMS to disable subs for movies played with your native language=ENG but for any other audio "*", play eng subs. In this case it is visible that subs will be "full", for whole movie.
If you will play movie with ENG audio but with foreign language parts, UMS must detect somehow what subs are "full" and what "forced" so user will not see subs also for english audio but only for specific parts.
For this purpose you need "forced" subs which include non-eng parts only. This is done via "flavor"->subtitle tag,by default it is "forced" string.
So to be played automatically also in case your preference says "eng,off" but forced subs are found, you need:
- Enable autoload subtitles with same name in GUI
- Move [MEncoder] engine at 1st position in preference (no need browsing to TRANSCODE folder when set)
- enable switching to tsMuxeR when transcoding is not needed (recommended so transcoding will be used only when it is needed (no subs, video compatible) - lower bitrate/CPU usage)
- check your external subs are in format like: sample.en-forced.srt or embedded subs have "forced" defined in "Title tag" as example below:

Hm...sort of made sense, however the above 2 options I have already done, this was due mainly to the tsmuxer option doing some 'strange' things during playback.

I have also found this in respect of Handbrake which might explain how I'm getting this to work, When ripping, select the English subtitles, but check the "Forced Only" box. This will create a subtitle track in the mkv that has only the subs that are marked as forced.

Apologies for resurrecting this, but I have stumbled across something first by chance and then by some further investigation and experimentation.

I'm currently using V3 and it's fine, streaming wirelessly to my son's PS3 was flawless....which is fantastic cos when we move house I may have to use wireless myself.

The addition of VLC as a renderer 10 out of 10.... which brings me back to the original subtitle issue.....

I have been using DVDFAB and Handbrake for convertion....copy the DVD to Hard Drive, then use either DVDFAB mkv passthrough to create an mkv container or rip with Handbrake. Now 'checking' the option on both piece's of software to extract 'forced subs' and remux into file works fine.

The output for the subtitles using MediaInfo is as follows:

ID : 3
Format : VobSub
Muxing mode : zlib
Codec ID : S_VOBSUB
Codec ID/Info : The same subtitle format used on DVDs
Default : Yes
Forced : No

This is the same from Handbrake as it is with DVDFAB......

The problem appears to be PGS subtitles, having done a lot of reading on Handbrake and MakeMKV, if I use Mencoder as the default renderer the PGS subs do not display if the default settings are used in the Common Transcode Settings>>>>>Subtitle Settings Tab. However, if I use VLC and leave the subtitle settings tab as default, the 'forced subs' are displayed.

It appears therefore that Mencoder cannot display the forced subs only unless the settings are changed in the subtitles tab. So the addition of VLC, for me, is great......
