Ok so it works in java 6 2.6.5 ?
So if you could post me a debug log on 2.6.5 on trace and a trace log on 3.1.0 i maybe able to isolate the issue. This maybe need to get the developers involved i think!!

No, I'm sorry, but I'm not able at this moment to revert back to java6.
I know for sure that on WINDOWS 2.6.5 works, on MAC 2.6.5, 3.0.0, 3.1.0 on Java7 It doesn't.

I'm looking into the subs issue to see if we have a similar problem
Also there should be a new Java 7 version up later today (my time)

I think it could be something related to the upnp profile.
mkv+subs doesn't work
mpg+subs does work.
i think something is preventing the server to transcode the video on-the-fly adding subs.

Ok what was the renderer your using again? I would like to try and test on a similar device to try and sort this out

I'm using MEncoder, but I tried on xbmc and there no subtitles either.

so your using xbmc to play your files?
Edit: could you get the latest version and upload a debug log from it for me as i would like to check it, Thanks as i know i'm being a pain in the butt

I'm using mainly WD TV Live Streaming, I can test with XBMC.
I'll do some test this evening and report results as soon as possible (I'm UTC+1)
EDIT: No worries mate, I'm used to beta testing stuff

Here I am. I tested 3.1.2.1 on OsX 10.8.4 with WD TV Live Streaming.
In the attachment, the full debug log (level trace).

Looking at the WDTVLive profile it seems that SubRips are marked as supported, but I know for sure that they are with other formats but NOT with MKV.
