Can't figure out basic setup...

I'm determined to get video streaming between my PC and PS3. There are so many .mkv files that I cannot successfully convert to any other file type, so I'd rather try to stream them straight from my PC to my PS3, rather than trying to convert them to a format that the PS3 can play without assistance.
I've scoured the internet for every guide that I can find regarding how to set up UMS to work with my PS3. They all basically say the same thing:
1. Install/Run UMS
2. Enable Media Sharing on the PS3
3. Go to PS3's video tab, and there's your server
4. Watch videos
I feel like there are a few steps missing, but all I am able to find as far as troubleshooting is people with very specific, very advanced problems. Is there REALLY no step between 2 and 3 telling my PS3 or PC how they should be communicating? Like, I start up UMS and it looks for a rendering device (and finds nothing). I go into my PS3 and tell it to look for a media server (and it finds nothing). I know this isn't some complicated one-in-a-million hiccup - there HAS to be some point at which I tell the PC how to broadcast properly, right? Or is it really supposed to be as simple as "install the program and it just WORKS", and I've got something more complicated than that going on?
