Onkyo stopped playing music files

I've been able to happily play flac files on UMS for quite a few UMS releases under half a dozen versions of Ubuntu, but something seems to have happened the last few days, and for some very peculiar reason, my Onkyo TX-8050 no longer plays them or for that matter mp3s (?!). I've toggled ffmpeg versions, and futzed with the renderers, to no avail. Strangely -- very strangely -- I can play music files on either type on my old PlayStation3.
I've attached a logfile. Also, here are the contents of the renderers -- first, the one that came with the latest UMS version which I downloaded and untarred into a new directory today

I have a TX-NR807 myself, and just like mine your Onkyo doesn't announce support for FLAC but plays it anyway:

The "officially supported" formats are basically limited to LPCM, MP3, WMA, AAC and WAV. AAC doesn't work because of missing implementation in UMS, but all the others plus FLAC work just fine for me (like they've used to for you I guess).
There's nothing much to see in the log, everything looks nice and UMS sends the FLAC to the Onkyo - and then the Onkyo simply disconnects. There's no hint as to why, and since it used to work something must have changed with the Onkyo. Have you done a firmware upgrade, or does it do that "on its own"?
If the firmware is the same, I'm as baffled as you. On my generation of Onkyo's there were a problem with the HDMI cards (which also has the DLNA renderer functionality and internet radio stuff on it). There's a recall for a lot of receivers for this problem, where you can get it repaired for free. This happened to mine at one stage, but I had a lot of sympthoms before it stopped working completely. I experienced problems both switching input source (I often had to do it multiple times) and freezing while browsing DLNA content before it eventually stopped working alltogther. After a lot of time and communication with Onkyo they replaced it. I don't know if this problem affects your Onkyo, I suspect that it might not because your is newer? Mine is from 2008 I think.
In any case, short of a firmware update or that you too have problems with the same card (although you haven't described the same symptoms), I really have no idea.

It's very strange. I had shipped it back 2.5 years ago for probably the same fix & it had worked fine since then. Just now upgraded the firmware, and -- it gets weirder -- it's now playing *most* of my flac files, but still chokes on the ones from that collection, even though 1) before, they played perfectly well, and 2) as far as I can tell they're the same bitrate. Maybe it just prefers Monk to Bartok?
For the moment I can live with it, but I suppose I might be in the market for a new one eventually -- if you (or anyone) has recommendations for an ethernet-enabled stereo receiver, pass them on! When it's worked, I've been perfectly content with this Onkyo TX-8050, but the fix was a pain, and now this -- think I might be cured of Onkyo for the time being.

I've had no trouble with mine after the replacement (1-2 years) of the card (knock on wood), and I really love it as long as it works. It's a shame that the quality of some of the components aren't up to par. I bet it has ended up costing Onkyo more this way than than it would have if they had used better quality components. As with all electronics, heat is the enemy, so I've rigged a couple of 200 mm fans to blows on mine constantly - so hopefully it will last for many years to come.
I have no idea about recommendations, but I had the impressions that Onkyo was among those that gave you most capabilities for your buck. That probably has a lot to do with the quality of the components, so you probably have to accept a higher price or less capabilities to get something that does the same without the risk of dying..

I've been on the same boat, my was the Onkyo TX-NR708 - what helped me was the factory reset (switch the receiver ON, then press and hold DVR/VCR button and at the same time press and hold ON/STANDBY button and wait for message "Clear" to display - page 84 here:

BTW, trouble with the HDMI board was tracked back to lead-free solder used in manufacture. HDMI CPU is running very hot and the leadfree solder is not good enough for such conditions, soon microfractures will develop in soldered connections and trouble will start. The repair is quiet trivial - service will simply heat the board up to solder melt temperature and the broken connections will resolder. You can help yourself immensely if you take your receiver appart and glue a standard CPU heatsink to the HDMI CPU (passive is good enough)

@Rejpal Thanks for interesting information. The problem is that they were to cheap to put a 20 cent heatsink there then.. It doesn't really make the situation any better, especially since they still don't install one when "repairing" the cards. Mine came back with a new/different card (some settings were different, the network name was for another model). If that's simply one they have reheated it means it will happen again.
Even though the fix is simple, it's not simple for those of us without the equipment to heat it to the exact temperature. I think I'll try to find the energy to glue a passive GPU cooler there before it goes again - the combination of that and my external fans blowing on the receiver should make it last "forever" then

Many thanks to you both for shedding light on this situation with your informed posts -- I am guessing it wasn't so much the firmware upgrade which cleared things up, rather the reset after, but of course I really don't know. Going to see if I can find a diagram of the innards & see if it won't be much trouble to glue on a heatsink -- I do use the thing quite a bit.
I'd heard great things about Onkyo before this from my audiophile friends, but this obviously is a black eye. It's a shame, especially since I get the feeling -- correct me if I'm wrong, I'm definitely no expert, I'm going on an hour's worth of skimming reviews and product descriptions -- that middle- and high-end stereo component manufacturers don't really see much of a point to ethernet connectivity (whereas it makes complete sense to me) and as a result, there really aren't that many receivers that incorporate it. As far as I can tell, no one else offers as many products that have it.
