Can't open UMS because it's from an unidentified developer

Hello! This is just a little advice, it's not a problem for me :)

From Mountain Lion to Mavericks, Apple has turned on automatically a security feature that gives users the ability to install software only from the Mac App Store and identified developers. Every time I update UMS to the latest version, the error message in the Subject appears. So I have to go to Settings, Security and unlock your app. The app will be unlocked till a new version of it.

I know this thing and of course it's not a problem for me to do it. But maybe a non-expert user would be stucked in this situation don't knowing what to do. Just to give you an example, I have 142 apps installed on my Mac and UMS is the only one with this "problem".

So, since I love this software and I'd like to have it available for everyone, my advice is: why don't you become a registered developer? I don't know if you want to do it or you're contrary to this thing... Instructions can be found here: https://developer.apple.com/library/ios ... tside.html

Hope to have helped you reaching more users :) Bye!

Happy to have helped you! :) You know, when I was using the "other" Media Server this wasn't happening, so I think that is not good that UMS, a better and more complete Media Server, has this little "problem" :)

See if this helps:

Gatekeeper gives you more control over what you install. You can choose the safest option and only allow apps that come from the Mac App Store to open. There is also the option of only allowing apps that come from the Mac App Store and identified developers. Or you can choose to allow any apps to open, just like previous versions of OS X.

Gatekeeper options are found in Apple menu > System Preferences… > Security & Privacy > General tab under the header "Allow applications downloaded from:"

Note: The default setting for Gatekeeper in OS X Lion v10.7.5 is "Anywhere".

Gatekeeper options are:

Mac App Store – Only apps that came from the Mac App Store can open.
Mac App Store and identified developers (default in OS X Mountain Lion) – Only allow apps that came from the Mac App Store and developers using Gatekeeper can open.
Anywhere – Allow applications to run regardless of their source on the Internet (default in OS X Lion v10.7.5); Gatekeeper is effectively turned off. Note: Developer ID-signed apps that have been inappropriately altered will not open, even with this option selected.
How to open an app from a unidentified developer and exempt it from Gatekeeper

If you are confident the app downloaded from the Internet is the latest version and is from a source you trust, you can open an app from an unidentified developer by following these steps.

Important: Some Apple screened apps from developers that are in the process of acquiring Developer ID signatures will present the "Open" option when they are double-clicked.

DeFlanko, as I said, I know how to unlock apps like UMS coming from unidentified developers. Mine was only an advise for you, to have a larger userbase :)

From Mountain Lion to Mavericks, the default option is "From Mac App Store and identified developers". So if someone (like me) knows what to do, that's fine, but if some other user doesn't know what to do, UMS will never start :)

Well normally our user base is a little more advanced... and i can only hope that our user's "Search" (be it here on UMS or on Google) before asking questions...

I don't see my mother using UMS because it doesn't involve sewing. Know what i mean?

But i get the point you're trying to make :) Im sure its an easy fix

Yeah, I totally agree with you :) Your users are 99% advanced, so it's for sure an "useless" thing to do... But, you know, the main reason why I told you all of this is because the "other" Media Server is an identified user, so why lacking only in this useless thing? :D
