Using UMS to stream from a NAS

I'm thinking about purchasing a gigabit 4TB NAS server and I have a few devices that I need to use UMS to transcode/remux files for certain streamers. If I'm running UMS on my PC like I currently am can I just map a drive and point UMS to the NAS?

This would be a Windows 7 machine running UMS.

Also, what would the performance be like in this kind of configuration? Has anyone tried it? Everything would be connected via a gigabit connection on the same switch.

One thing to consider when hosting on a NAS is that your now limited to the NAS's processor as well as the network card on the NAS device, the router or switch's processor and connection speed.
(alot more variables.)

Granted to should not be bad -- but i can see how if you have a standard PC that doesn't support RAID 5 then a NAS is a way to go to provide for Data Reliability. (after all thats the only reason why you would ever need a NAS)

Otherwise if your System board can DO RAID 5 -- then host on your system.

For example:

I use a Server Workstation - Xeon board that can do Raid 5 for all my Disks. I have no need for a NAS. (one less thing to fail)

I have been running NAS 4 Free with UMS and it worked fine. ZFS, in my opinion is much better than a raid 5 setup. I used a raid 5 (hardware adaptec card) for a long time but after reading about zfs i changed (but one trade off is you will need a little more hardware). Once again only an opinion.
For some more info, i am running all that on a Dual Xeon E5-2609 running Hyper-V Server 2012 R2, with a VM instance dedicated to NAS 4 Free and it's ZFS array (you don't need a setup like this to run NAS 4 Free with ZFS).
