questions before deciding to install

For use with a MacBook Pro, OS 10.7.5 connected to a LaCie 1TB drive, using a Sony Blue Ray Player Model BDP-S580, with a Sony Bravia TV Model KDL-32BX320. The wifi router is an Airport Extreme.

The only review on Softpedia stated "warning, install Google Chrome without your explicit permission." Any other unannounced installs? Any way to prevent/control, if so?
We don't speak or tweak JavaScript, or command line, no compiling, etc (we are not programmers) ...
We don't know what transcoding or muxing are and don't really need to.
Our goal is to have the blue ray player access MP4 from the LaCie via the MacBook Pro's wifi network to play on the Sony Bravia.
Second use is to send a streaming video via wifi from the MacBook Pro to the BDP/Sony Bravia, for example, sending something from CBSonline to the TV for viewing.
Is it possible to do this without knowing transcoding, etc? And if so, is it relatively simple and straightforward so set up?
Would appreciate any guidance you can give.
