Multi Sub in MKV Video

@Mik_s

I am trying to play some video with multiple subtitles that are integrated within MKV files. Instantly the Samsung player plays the video but when the subtitle appears on the screen it freezes the screen for a moment, as if the player can't keep up with the pace. I also realized that the country languages in the settings are not recognized by their proper name in the Samsung player. My question is whether it is the Samsung player that is the cause or there is an adjustment that I need to make in UMS or simply this is a bug.

Thanks!

I think it is related to a bug that appeared in 14.7.0 that stopped external subtitles from working as we discovered here.

If you can go back to v14.6.0 and it works normally then this will confirm it. There has been a a fix that should be in the next version.

Well, I had read this post. But I thought it was a fix for external subtitles. But I don't think it was also for internal ones.
For my part I did some tests with external subtitles and I have no problem.
With version 14.6.0 I have the same problem with internal subtitles. I will try to find other videos with the same number of subtitles (30) since I did a test with 24 subtitles and all worked well except the country languages in the settings which are still not recognized?

I will come back to you if I find anything else.

I thought that might have worked as the fix had to do with parsing one of the tag characters that was being ignored and that may have had the language info in it.
One of them must have been forgotten about in 14.7.0

Having said that since the subtitles are internal and that video is being streamed then it is up to the TV to handle the subs so maybe there is a problem with that video?
Does it only happen on that one video or does it happen with others?

I see you were trying to transcode to get the subs as well. Did this play properly with the subs?

Yes, I did use the transcoder, but with no transcoding I had the same problem. With FFMPEG or MEENCODER it worked with the French subtitle only. As for VLC Video it didn't work at all.

But when I play the video on the UMS Web interface it works very well. With the subs a little bit in the fog and the corner. See image

To your question

''Does it only happen on that one video or does it happen with others?'' I would say no, with this type of format I always have the same issue.

e.g.

MEDIAINFO

Container = Matroska (mkv)
Duration = 00:35:18.901
Filesize = 211 MiB
Overall bitrate = 837 kb/s
Video
Codec info = AVC [email protected] | V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC
Resolution = 1280x720
Display AR = 1.778 | 16:9
Bitrate = 4 731 kb/s
Framerate = CFR 24.000
Color space = YUV
Chroma subsampling = 4:2:0
Encoder = x264 - core 164 r3095 baee400
Audio
Codec info = AAC | A_AAC-2
Channels = 2
Bitrate = 768 kb/s
Samplerate = 48.0 kHz

Included subtitles
English, English, Arabic, Chinese, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Spanish, fil, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Bokmal, Polish, Portuguese, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Spanish

Anyway I sent you a personal message, so that you can download the video via Mega and see if you have the same problem as me with your Samsung TV.

Awaiting your feedback. ;)

I tried that video on my TV but even though it should work and UMS streams it I get the message "The selected file is not currently supported" on the TV.
I even copied it to a USB stick to play directly on the TV and got the same message.
Looking at the MediaInfo I don't see what is incompatible. Maybe there is a problem with the video?

See if your TV will play that video from a USB stick too so it removes UMS from the equation.
If it still cannot play then the only option is to force transcode.

When you say it only works for French when transcoding is that the only option available or does all the sub languages show in the transcoding folder?

I have the same result on a USB key, as soon as the subtitles appear there is a temporary freeze of the video.There is no change in the languages they are always indicated as language 1, language 2 etc..

For transcoding I have no additional language choice just the one that is showing by defaut.

I will send another video from another source. I bet your TV will not be able to play the video due to the age of your TV. It would be good if someone had a TV from 2020 and up to do the test. The blu-rays I have are from the 2017 to 2019 generation.

This confirms there is something wrong with that video, maybe the way it was encoded or something in the subs that is causing your TV to crash.
This is probably why mine won't play it either.

The 2nd link was the same as the first one you sent, but if the video is using h265 then I would not be able to play it.
Does this play from USB on yours or does it do the same thing?

You should be able to select any sub language from the transcode folder but I think something is wrong when one of the subs is marked Forced in a video.
I would expect this to only show English as this one is forced but as you are using French as your main language it is only showing this which is weird and should not be happening.

I noticed something might be wrong a while ago but I thought it was a change to streamline the transcode folder otherwise there could be over 100 entries with every combination of audio track, subtitle, and transcoding engine. It was not till I wanted to watch something in Japanese when it had Dual Audio but I and could not select the English subs without messing with the settings.

See if changing the language of UMS to English will allow the English subs to work.
You could even try other languages too to confirm this has an effect but still unable to select from all of them at once.

@Mik_s

I found a tool for converting MKV files called MKVTOOLNIX. [https://github.com/jlesage/docker-mkvto ... me-ov-file] As suspected my UBD-M7500, M8500, and M9500 series Blu-ray players are limited by the number of subtitles they couldn't recognize by name in the container, which also caused video tracking to freeze temporarily.

It would be interesting in a future UMS version to have a similar tool that would allow us to choose default languages and subtitles in the UMS application settings to limit them when streaming to the TV or Blu-ray.

Please close my post, unless you want to move it as new one for improvement in the suggestion section.

Thank you again.
