Is it possible to extend the filename length a few characters (preferably a lot of characters)? I ran into a few files that were too long and thus would not show in media listings.

What does the UMS logs say? I would be surprised if UMS is the one preventing the files to displayed rather the render having some limit on name length. It sounds like UMS should have an option to trim the name (only when talking to the render not actually removing chars of the file name). How long is the file name? Make a copy of the file and then trim of bytes until you see the file.
