VLC/Android 'renderer'

I would like to play files from my computer on my android tablets/phones using VLC, if there is another recommended Android app I would be interested in checking that out.
I am able to view files using the web interface, but playback is not great, it uses an old old version of flash since new versions are no longer made for android. Also, I find VLC overcomes playback issues in almost every circumstance.
There are VLC 'engines' on the 'transcoding' page, not sure if they're related but going to the web interface URL through VLC doesn't work.
Does anyone know of a way to get VLC to play files from UMS? And failing that, does anyone know a good android app for accessing UMS?
**EDIT** I have had some success using MediaHouse v1.5 for Android, which accesses media from my PC server and plays it to VLC. I would still like to leave this thread open to other suggestions and any method that is more direct(IE straight to VLC without need for 2nd program) or a media renderer that is standalone player
