memory usage / requirements

With ref to a previous question posted here.
So far, UMS is the only media server that I can use for both music & vids that also supports my Pioneer DLNA network speaker.
Unfortunately, in my case, enabling UMS to handle my music always crash the server due to memory running out. Tried maxing out Java as much as doable, but doesn't help.
So, with a big big music library, looks like one has to use 64bit system and give UMS a LOT of memory to work with,
or is it possible that some tweak might come along that somehow handles the large number of files without depleting the memory at once ?
NOT a programmer at all, so very probable I'm way off here, but since UMS handles a lot of series, movies, etc that would be supported by the amount of memory either,
one wonders how come such excess usage comes when UMS scans the mp3's/flac's, etc ?
