help for a noobie

i just switched from using PS3 Media Server for like 6 years....it was giving me a lot of issues with playing things over to my PS3. so i was looking around on the net and people where saying that UMS was pretty much a better version of PMS, so i got rid of pms and installed ums. so far everything seemed to work great, however, today while i was streaming some stargate atlantis .avi files there would be times where it would hang up from time to time and just kinda pause for 6-15 seconds and then resume normal for a bit then do it again.
if anyone knows some things i could try to solve this, that would be great. also both my pc and the ps3 are on a gigabit wired net
