can't play mp4/mkv from zip&rar files

created a rar file from an mkv file. no splitting.
created a zip from same mkv.
repeated with an mp4 file.
can play originals just fine, can see files inside archives, but it won't play video file, screen stays blank.
another archive with just images works fine.
