Subtitles show only for 720p or up

I've installed UMS 2.2.1 for the first time, with default settings. I render on a Samsung UN60ES7500F tv. The srt and idx/sub external subtitles are shown only on 720p or 1080p movies. On anything less than that there are no subtitles. Is there something I can do in the Settings, or UMF.conf, that can force external subtitles to show in less than HD and non-standard resolutions (i.e. 640x272, 656x272, 624x256, 720x400, etc...). Many thanks for any help I can get!
